Default Radio Comparison question?

What is the difference between the Degen 1103 which sells for about
$55.00

and the Kaito 1103 which sells for around $109.00?

The radios look identical. They have the same very high rating on
eham.net

The only difference I can see is that one costs twice as much as the
other.

Is there something else I'm missing?

Just one of those things that make you go hummmm.

Basically its where the target audience is located. Both are the same inside
and made by the same chinese factory. The Degen is made to sell primarily in
asia to the home audience so to speak, the Kaito is marketed to the richer
worldwide audience including the US and Canada.

Originally Degen didn't carry the same length warranty but that changed in
the last year. Originally the Degen didn't have the US Charger but it too is
available now.

Or so I've been told.

They are the same radio with different badges. The Kaito 1103 is distributed
by US dealers and usually comes with a decent warranty... if it breaks, you
don't have to ship it back to China. It also comes with an AC adapter for US
mains. The Degen (China) version comes with one for Chinese mains, so you'd
need to purchase a separate adapter that steps up to 220 volts from 110.

It's a quite ecent performing radio for the money.

Default Radio Comparison question?

A good place to buy any Degen Radio is from lipyn - here's a direct
link to the offering of the Degen 1103 -
http://cgi.ebay.com/NIB-DE1103-SSB-S...cmdZVie wItem

It looks like the total with shipping and the 110v adapter would be
about $72.80. The only difference between the Degen and the Kaito is
the hassle you would have to go through to get any warranty work done.
They are both made at the same facility, and otherwise are the same
product.

I've ordered a Degen 1105 and a Degen DE-31 Active Loop Antenna from
Liypn, and have been very happy with the transaction, plus both items
arrives 3-4 days ahead of schedule. I also have a Kaito 1102 that I
bought from a dealer north of St. Paul, MN, but I paid twice for that
what you would for an 1103 from liypn. The 1102 is a wonderful radio,
but has drawbacks if you like to use SSB a lot (only works on page 9,
but that's not a problem with the 1103).

In addition, you wouldn't necessarily need to order the 220/110 adapter
initially. I use 2500mah NiMH rechargeable on all my portables and
they work great, plus I don't have to deal with excess Radio Frequency
Interference (RFI) that is produced by some wall plug in's. The only
problem that you'll run into with using NiMH batteries is if you have a
batter hog, like my Sangean Super 909. I made an external battery pack
for that one, but that won't be the case with a Degen 1103.

Hope some of this information has helped! I wouldn't hesitate to go
with a Degen.

The Degen 1103 and Kaito 1103 are identical radios, except one runs on 220
volts and the other on 120 volts.

On ebay, besides the reliable Lypin, another dealer sells both the Degen
1103 and the USA version.

There is no difference in quality between the USA and foreign version.
