Grundig S350
Ham Radio Outlet has Grundig s350 for 100 bucks. I am thinking to buy
it for my young 11yo niece. She likes radios. I gave her a Hallicrafters boatanchor tabletop but her daddy won't put up an antenna. Is that a good radio for 100 bucks? Regards, NEO |

It's got nice sound, but it's main drawback is that it's a single conversion radio, so beware of images. The more recent version seems to have fixed some of the stability issues, which was another big problem in years past. --Mike L. |

A big antenna will generate strong signals on most bands and she will see plenty of images. -- Telamon Ventura, California |

I purchased a Tecsun BCL 3000 last fall which is much the same as the Eton
350 Deluxe except it has a smaller speaker. I'm very happy with it, although it's used more for AM DX. It's compact enough to leave on the kitchen table and it gets used daily. Today I saw the red Eton 350 Deluxe model on sale at The Source for $129 CDN and the Grundig 350 selling for $99 CDN. "N9NEO" wrote in message ups.com... The wind up Grundig FR200 radios are nice, but I had two that both developed
problems with the volume control. After a few months of daily use at the office, the volume control became very noisy. I ended up returning both radios. It's too bad they couldn't be built with slightly better parts. They are just the right size to keep at work, cute as a button, and they are very good on batteries. I guess most people buy these radios and put them away for an emergency, They will rarely come across this problem because their radios will never see extended use.. I ended up getting a Degen DE1107 to use at work. I was happy with it until the LCD clock stopped working out of the blue. I'm waiting for a warranty replacement unit now. Apart from the clock going south, the radio is very good. The domestic version being sold in the US is the Kaito KA1107. You may find this model interesting.. "N9NEO" wrote in message oups.com... Yep, they have em at Rad Shack. I looked at the local store recently but they didn't have anything but the bogus wind up toys. The Rad Shack down the road a few miles has the 350. I think I will have to wait till after lent. No more toys for now. I'll pick up at Easter time and play with for a few days then off to my niece. 73 NEO |

On the subject of RS closing some shops, I talked to my local RS dude this
morning on that very subject, hoping to get some inside info on some upcoming good deals (!); he said they're just gonna shift inventory from one area store to another and close down the least profitable ones (like his, sadly), and he really doesn't expect there to be any "steals" per se in this go round, but he promised to keep me in mind should he be wrong! : } wrote in message ... Isn't the Grundig 350 SL radios that is suppose to be the best one? Check your local area Radio Shack stores. Not long ago,I read that Radio Shack is going to close down a lot of their stores. You might get a good deal on a Grundig 350 SL.I think I saw one of those radios in a local Jackson Radio Shack store about five months ago.I dont remember what the price was though. cuhulin |

I recently picked up a red Eton S350DL (which appears to be an
upgraded version of the Grundig S350) on ebay for $110.79 total, including shipping. There's one even now (item # 5863040259) listed at $114.99 plus $12.99 shipping. They list at about $150.00. Thanks everybody for comments. I will probably change my mind ten
times before I eventually buy anything. Seems like the Degen might be a likely candidate. I found a pdf file from Phil that you might like to take a look at. It's called "Phil's Portable radio guide" and has the kind of info to make a decision. You will be surprised what he finds to be the best radios. Maybe you will just have to buy another radio after reading this. 73 Bob N9NEO |

If you was planning on at first spending about $100.00 for a Shortwave
radio,I think it is hard to beat spending that amount of money for a new Sony 7600 GR radio. The best in it's class for the money. cuhulin |

N9NEO wrote: Is that a good radio for 100 bucks? Hmmmm, well, if given the option a second time, I probably wouldn't buy it for $100, even if the newer ones are more stable than the early model I picked up. The major plus is that it's quite sensitive. I don't particularly care for all of the images on this set. As far as this type of radio (analog w/digital readout) goes, I prefer my ol' Panasonic RF-2600 and 2900 (admittedly these two models, as well, suffer from some image problems). The S350 is excellent on batteries. By and large, the audio is pretty decent on the S350, although mine rarely remains stationary on a SW frequency for long. I do use the S350 a lot for FM listening, for which it's fairly decent. This thing seems to have been designed for those who have some nostalgia for old portables like the two Panasonics mentioned above. Would an 11 year old go for it? I honestly don't have any idea. But all the best in making your decision. junius |

Extremely sensitive radio for the money. I bought mine new via Ebay for $60.

From time to time, Amazon and J&R Music World offer them on sale for
about $129.00. Keep checking their sites. I bought two more of them (giving me a total of five) from Amazon this past December for $129.15 each with free shipping. While not "perfect" (what radio is?), it's definitely the best overall small portable SW receiver available right now. It would be ideal for a child as she will never outgrow it. Best, Joe |

Best, Joe You can add the audio outputs and reduce the internal noise on a weak station. On the other hand, you increase the frequency of losing sync lock on a weak station, so it may not pay. Curiously, the audio phase is reversed in the 7600G (no R) so you can't add one of those in the mix usefully. A better approach costwise is buy a better synch detector'd receiver, like the old 2010, for weak stations, of course. I'd add the R8B but I don't know that it's better costwise than 14 7600GR's by experience. -- Ron Hardin On the internet, nobody knows you're a jerk. |

I went for the Degen 1107 on Ebay, I think about 54bucks shipped from
China. Very good writeup on the radiointel.com site so what the heck. 73 Bob N9NEO |

This would probably be a better choice than the S350. (and that, too,
at half the price!) By the way, could you please provide the link for the radiointel review on the 1107? I didn't find it when I took a look there. I wonder how the performance of the DE1107 compares with Sony's analog SW11... Seem to be similar in coverage, although the Degen offers the 75m band and better coverage of the 41m band. junius N9NEO wrote: I went for the Degen 1107 on Ebay, I think about 54bucks shipped from China. Grundig S350 & S350DL
Everyone who is contemplating buying a Grundig/Eton S350 or S350DL or
who already owns one, and especially anyone thinking of buying one used off eBay or from a dealer, should be aware that there has just been a dramatic change in the list price in recent weeks. It appears that Eton/Grundig has reduced the list price on the S350DL radio from $150 to $100 (and also the list price on the YB550PE from $100 to $80). I had gotten a catalog from a mail-order dealer who I did not consider to be a source of radios (Siegler & Co.) that had some Eton radios in it, and was surprised to see the S350DL at only $99.95. I went through a series of contacting them to verify that it was really the S350DL and not just the S350, and they assured me that it really was the S350DL. I had a 10%-off on-line order discount code and so I ordered one. Since I thought that this was a really surprisingly good deal, I also notified Hauser's "DXLD" Yahoo group and the SWPrograms mailing list about this. Then I happened to actually *read* the print in Eton's ads in PopComm and noticed that the February and March '06 ads show the list price of the S350DL now to be $100, and they no longer listed the old S350. The Feb '06 MT still has the old Eton ad with the S350DL at $150 list and the S350 at $100; I haven't gotten the March issue yet. Anyway, this certainly affects all the S350 and S350DL owners and sellers and prospective buyers, and also makes it much less advantageous to get the Tecsun version! I did a quick Google search just now and see that many sites are still selling these at the old higher prices, and it seems that the news about the new lower prices has not propagated widely. This should drive the price of any remaining new S350s still on a dealer's shelf down to maybe $50 as a discontinued close-out, and also cause the prices of any used S350s and S350DLs on eBay or used-radio-dealer sale lists to plummet! Also much wailing and gnashing of teeth amongst those who bought these radios at the old price, I expect. A similar effect on YB550PE prices, too. So I hope the info can be spread among the SW-radio community. Also, I took a look at the www.etoncorp.com website -- BOTH the S350 and S350DL are listed on it at $100 list price each! The YB550PE, which is in the current ad in PopComm at the new lower price of $80, isn't mentioned at all! 73, Will Martin |
