With BBCWS service to the Americas all but cut off, I decided to try the
frequencies for East Asia and West Africa for reception of The World Today at 0300. The Asian frequencies are 15280, 17760 and 21660 and NONE of them were audible. 21660 was totally silent and 15280 and 17760 had occasional bits of signal popping up but nothing listenable. Then I tried the freqs for West Africa, listed as 6035 and 7160. 7160 had some sort of data transmission dominating the frequency, not surprising since this is a ham band in NAm. 6035 was actually quite listenable with occasional fading. I am in California, so the audibility of 6035 was a surprise. BBC website says this is from tx's in South Africa-quite a long way to go! Apparently 6035 is the best bet for evening audibility of The World Today. At 0400 this switches to 6005 out of Ascension which can sometimes be strong enough to spill over on to Cuba on 6000. Both 6035 and 7160 start at 0300. BBCWS does not broadcast from 0000 to 0300 in Africa-not surprising since it is the middle of the night there. |
