With BBCWS service to the Americas all but cut off, I decided to try the
frequencies for East Asia and West Africa for reception of The World
Today at 0300. The Asian frequencies are 15280, 17760 and 21660 and NONE
of them were audible. 21660 was totally silent and 15280 and 17760 had
occasional bits of signal popping up but nothing listenable. Then I
tried the freqs for West Africa, listed as 6035 and 7160. 7160 had some
sort of data transmission dominating the frequency, not surprising since
this is a ham band in NAm. 6035 was actually quite listenable with
occasional fading. I am in California, so the audibility of 6035 was a
surprise. BBC website says this is from tx's in South Africa-quite a
long way to go! Apparently 6035 is the best bet for evening audibility
of The World Today. At 0400 this switches to 6005 out of Ascension which
can sometimes be strong enough to spill over on to Cuba on 6000. Both
6035 and 7160 start at 0300. BBCWS does not broadcast from 0000 to 0300
in Africa-not surprising since it is the middle of the night there.

well, i listen to BBC on 5.975 and it takes care of all my British
listening. they cover much of the world on their news.
I have a small portable radio shack dx-375 and i can get israel in
hebrew on 7.545 and russia on 7180 among other ones, such as the
netherlands. the airwaves are especially busy and clearer this
evening. it is a long time since i was able to get switzerland. 5960
sounds like tokyo at this time, but sometimes i think i got china there,
and i used to get turkey on 5960 as well as canada on 5960.
Do any Russia listeners know whether that is vladimir posen back on
voice of russia? remember he came over here during glastnos and the fall
of the soviets. I wonder if he went back because could swear that is his
voice now.

Usually 25 db over s9 or better in upstate NY on a Sat800 with a good
external antenna. They were NOT heard last evening

That's because that transmission no longer exists.

Thus the point of my post, which it seems the two responses missed. As
of Monday March 27, the 0300 BBCWS broadcast on 5975 from the Delano tx
no longer exists. In fact, if you look at the BBCWS website you'll see
that all transmissions for Central and South America have ceased, and
the Caribbean is limited to four or five hours during the day local
time. Ace, have you tried the 6035 tx at 0300? It should come in even
better in Michigan.

Well, the 5975 tx was from a transmitter in the US, so naturally it was
strong. 6035 is from South Africa, so it will be weaker. Ascension
always puts in a good signal on 6005, but 7160 is in the middle of the
41m ham band and is thus subsceptible to QRM (like last night when some
sort of data tx was there). CRI seems all too happy to fill the void
left by VOA and BBC, and somebody posted here a letter to the Washington
Post in which a VOA employee urges Americans to listen to CRI. Sometimes
I think that everybody in the US govt is smoking crack. Oh wait, Dumbya
refused to answer questions about his cocaine usage...

On the bright side, Marocaine on 5980 will
come in better now.

Here in Seattle yesterday/Sunday, 15280 and/or 15360 provided a passable
signal (S1 - S3) from about 0:00 to 2:00. Later on in the year around
the summer solstice, 15360 often provides a resonable signal around
07:00-09:00.

But paths like that often depend on time of year and quit working, often
quite abruptly.

Spot check at 16:12 Monday morning show 7160 and 6195 coming in very
well. S6-S7. 9740's empty, though. I think they've moved that up
to the 11 MHz band. Time to download the charts.
