I have discovered that my Kaito KA1101 doesn't receive any better off an
external antenna than it does on the attached telescoping, so I am looking
for recommendations for a "nightstand" SW receiver that properly utilizes an
external antenna.

Hi:
Which external antenna are you using? I recently found that the wire antenna that came with my Kaito 1102 didn't do much for me, but the reel antenna that came with my SW7600GR is quite effective.

I have used a reel antenna as well as a homemade dipole thus far, both with
& without a Radio Shack shortwave antenna amplifier . . .

Try using an external antenna with a co-ax lead in.

The average house / apt has all sorts of electronic noise that a coax
lead-in reduces,
increasind SW reception / Clarity..

I'm using an ICOM R75. Sometimes I use a Drake SW2, but that's my
kitchen radio right now.

David - Had an Uncle in Sacramento who had an
old Hallicrafters S-38 in the Kitchen and that was
"His Early Morning Breafast Radio"; everyone else
got to listen to the old RCA AM Tube Radio. ~ RHF
