'Exemplifying What Can Be Done During Emergencies':

Amateur radios can be overlooked among an explosion of communication
devices, but a program in Garden City will give them center stage later
this month. The Garden City Amateur Radio Club will demonstrate the value
of amateur radios and their effectiveness to work reliably in any condition
and from almost any location in setting up a remote emergency
communications network. GCAR members will be among ham operators across the
country and Canada operating non-stop during the radio marathon, June
25-26.Come see: The local program is open to the public at the Ford-Drake
Memorial Society's scout cabin, 1524 Middlebelt Road in Garden City. It
begins at 2 p.m. Saturday and ends at noon on Sunday. The group will use
Federal Communications Commission allocated frequencies to send signals,
explained Richard Zarczynski, Garden City Amateur Radio Club media
coordinator. "All currently licensed amateur radio operators are welcome to
join our club members in operating from multiple stations," Zarczynski
said. "We will be making as many contacts as possible with other operators
over different bands on the airwaves." "It will exemplify what can be done
during an emergency with volunteers," he said adding that ham radio
operators provide "a necessary service to the community when other means of
communications fail. Lately, during hurricanes, there are teams of
operators who set up communication in very remote islands to get
information back about first aid and what's needed in that area."

Cranwell Aviation Heritage Centre Goes On the Air!

Join Cranwell Aviation Heritage Centre as they take part in an amateur
radio special event - International Museums Weekend. Popular for amateur
radio enthusiasts and anyone just interested in our heritage, International
Museums Weekend was created in order to set up amateur radio special event
stations at as many museums as possible throughout the whole of the world.
The event will take place over two weekends -- June 18 to 19 and 25 to 26.
Publicity Officer for the international event, Sue Pyecroft said: "Since
the initial weekend in 2002, with 80 museums participating across the UK,
numbers have increased and we now have museums 'on air' from Australia,
Canada, Greece, Ireland, Austria, France and Germany as well as the UK. "It
is a good way to let other people know about the museums we have chosen to
support - not just the people we actually talk to but the multitude of
listeners - and a very good excuse for radio amateurs to spend time talking
to other people worldwide as well as the visitors to the museum. "We
demonstrate the hobby and can answer questions about ways of obtaining an
amateur licence as well as the numerous types of communication we use, from
Morse code to computer based data modes as well as speech. Some of the
participating museums have their own permanent amateur station as part of
the attraction who are 'on air' at other times than just museums on the air
weekends."

Ham Radio Club Still Going Strong:

ROCKINGHAM -- When members of the Richmond County Amateur Radio Club --
also known as ham operators -- attend public events such as the Hamlet
Seaboard Festival, people ask them what they broadcast. "Yeah because when
we refer to our radio stations, they automatically think we're
broadcasters," said club president Mark Dawkins. "Or they sometimes confuse
us with citizens band. When the general public looks at us when we're at
events, we don't have time enough to explain the difference in CB radio and
what we do."
