Default WIANEWS for week commencing April 29 2007

This is WIANEWS for week commencing April 29 2007

The WIA AGM weekend of activities is all set to kick off next weekend the
4th to the 6th of May. Enthusiasm and registrations for each of the weekend
events have well and truly outstripping the expectations of the event
organizing committee, Phil Wait, Robert Broomhead and WIA secretary
Ken Fuller.

It was some weeks ago that we announced on this broadcast that places for
both the astronomical society meeting and the telescope tours had reached
(and had infact exceeded) capacity. This week as registrations for the
Saturday BBQ and AGM dinner are finalised, we take a moment to look at a
brand new award, an award which will be presented for the very first time
this year at the AGM in Parkes.

It is the Chris Jones Award...

Here's WIA director Robert Broomhead VK3KRB with details..

The award is to honour the memory of Chris Jones VK2DD, who contributed
so much to the advancement of amateur radio and the Wireless Institute of
Australia and whose unfailing commitment and vision led to the formation
of the national Wireless Institute of Australia.

It is to be awarded to radio amateurs who have made an exceptional
contribution to amateur radio and the Wireless Institute of Australia and
will be presented this year for the very first time at this years AGM in
Parkes.

The award will not necessarily be made every year.

The award will be a handsome glass trophy. The Chris Jones Award honours
the memory of a man who was dedicated to the advancement of amateur radio
and whose commitment and vision led to a new WIA and whose unfailing
courtesy and genuine friendliness is fondly remembered by all who knew him.

The first award will be given this year and has been decided by the
WIA Board. The recipient will be announced at the Open Forum
following the Annual General Meeting in Parkes, New South Wales, on 5
May 2007.

Last week we spoke to our pedestrian mobile station VK4XJJ Jeff who
in raising funds and awareness for the deafdumb is walking from
Port Augusta in VK5 to Kurrumba in VK4

Well WIA Broadcaster Terry VK4AAT of 160 meter AM fame is just one of many
who have worked Jeff VK4XJJ on 7050-7060 at 5:30pm AEST with a 57 signal
into Brisbane from his 5w backpack.

Donations can be sent via the address in this weeks bulletin, so come on
let's get behind this great cause

GENERAL INTEREST NEWS FROM 'DOWNUNDER'.

Final stage in place to allow a limited evaluation of mobile telephone
services on board a commercial aircraft

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has enabled a limited
evaluation of GSM mobile phones and GPRS devices on a commercial aircraft.

The evaluation - which is limited to one aircraft for up to 12 months -
will be conducted by Qantas. It will be one of the first implementations
of this kind of service in the world.

The evaluation will be conducted on one Qantas passenger aircraft operating
only on domestic Australian routes. Qantas has decided to commence the
evaluation with email and text only, disabling voice services. ACMA
and other government bodies will consider the potential for permanent
regulatory arrangements for the service once the results of the evaluation
are known.

AMATEUR RADIO - HOME OF THE GOOD GUYS

CHUBB TO THE RESCUE.

Mr. Peter Sellwood, Portable Service Manager for CHUBB Australasia recently
advised the NERG that he and CHUBB would donate 4 knapsack style fire
extinguishers for N.E.R.G. use, such as when the club members "go bush" for
Amateur radio exercise.

They will be available for both the club's and individuals usage.

The knapsack extinguishers will become part of the clubs safety equipment
for future field days (just in case their Big Yeller 6kW generator starts
a grass fire!).

Good one CHUBB.

BPL INTERFERENCE - THE BATTLE CONTINUES

VK7News SAYS Sceptical N.Y. Utilities Study BPL for Smart Grid Applications

The following summary is drawn from an article by Dinesh Kumar from
the internet e-zine "Warren's Washington Internet Daily, Volume 8;
Issue 66 on 6 April 2007.

BPL may not see all smooth sailing even when it comes to duty in
automated meter reading and remote control of home appliances,
judging from filings to the New York Public Service Commission (PSC).

The BPL industry is banking on heightened regulatory focus in
Congress and state emphasis on energy conservation and better grid
management to get "risk-averse" utilities to adopt the technology to
improve grid efficiencies and maintenance. In response to the N.Y.
PSC's advanced meter reading order, major power utilities seemed
reluctant in filings to commit to BPL as the sole answer, and one
rejected BPL because it's still evolving.

Consolidated Edison (ConEd) said it and many utilities are looking at
BPL's suitability not only for high-speed Internet but also for
electrical distribution asset monitoring, substation video
surveillance, automated meter reading and the like. But BPL does have
a "high level of uncertainty both in technical and total
functionality" in ConEd's distribution grid, it added.

ConEd "eliminated" BPL from its "current business case" after
deciding the technology is still developing and the "present costs of
this communication infrastructure and the greater costs of BPL-
related meters make this technology significantly more costly" than
other automated meter methods.

(NYSEG) and Rochester Gas & Electric Corp. said full BPL deployment
isn't a "viable communication solution" for their full service
territories. But "utility-grade" BPL, which doesn't support streaming
video, VoIP and some other services, would be useful and efficient in
areas with fibre networks and high meter density, they said in a
joint filing. BPL's advantage over wireless technologies is that it
allows real-time 2-way communications between meters and the
distribution system, it said. It also offers sufficient bandwidth and
low latency to allow communications to equipment and appliances for
real-time appliance control from a central location.

New radio event scores very well - The Centre Victoria RadioFest at
Kyneton held last Sunday set a number of benchmarks for this type of event.

Many favourable comments were received from those who had previously
attended amateur radio events and it attracted lots who were out to
experience their very first.

No Victorian event had been mounted on such a scale and at large,
yet mainly under-cover venue. One comment often heard was that people had
smiles on their faces and the social atmosphere was great.

More than 550 attended on the day. In the opinion of the commercial traders
it was "Australia's best organised event".

WIA President, Michael Owen VK3KI who helped man the WIA stand, described
the RadioFest as "excellent" and congratulated the organisers on a job well
done.

The top door prize from Vertex Standard Australia, a Yaesu FT857D
transceiver was collected by Kevin Hughes VK3WN after his non-ham XYL Pearl,
had the winning ticket.

A full report of the day can be read on the website
radiofest.amateurradio.com.au

The Organising Committee, with representatives from Amateur Radio Victoria,
Central Goldfields Amateur Radio Club and the Midland Amateur Radio Club,
says "thank you" to the volunteers, traders, second-hand sellers,
club corner participants, come 'n try activity providers, mini-lecture
presenters and the many hundreds that attended and enjoyed the day.

A reminder about our "Intro to the Standard Licence" sessions on a
Saturday afternoons from 1:00 to 4:00pm in the Domain clubrooms.

These sessions are an introduction to the standard and advanced
licences and will be structured into three distinct activities:

1-2pm Operating time - starting with a relaxing time - running the
club station VK7OTC on 2metres R2 and 40metres around 7.065MHZ for
that rare VK7OTC contact and QSL card. We may even play some digital
modes on HF, VHF & UHF.

2-3pm Learning time - white boarding and demonstrating concepts and
amateur radio problems that people bring along - eventually we see
people bringing along a wish-list of problems, issues, ideas,
concepts they would like explained including running through sample
exam questions.

3-4pm Chill-out - wind down time, where attendees can do anything
relating to amateur radio, continue with questions, playing ATV,
operating VK7OTC, construction, testing, etc.

These sessions are there to provide an introduction and de-mystify
the standard and advanced licences in preparation for the Standard

IARU committee for common HAM license systems

The IARU Council is in the process of establishing an IARU
exploratory committee for the purpose of investigating ways to
progress a commonly adopted amateur license so that radio amateurs
of one country are able to operate in another country without the
need for a permit being issued by the administration of the country
visited. It recognizes the importance of such arrangements for operation
to the amateurs of the world and the need for amateurs to travel to
other countries for the purpose of carrying out emergency communications.

Suggestions are now being looked at for a suitable person, well versed
in the subject to head the committee.

NEWS FROM ARNEWSLINE

COPPER 'THUGS' - COPPER THEFTS COST FOUR LIVES

Four people have been electrocuted in recent days after trying to
steal copper cable that they apparently thought was not in use.

DesignLine.com reports that two New Hampshire men were buried last
week after they were electrocuted while taking copper wire from an
unoccupied power plant in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts. The bodies were
found lying alongside bolt cutters and coils of copper wire.
According to law enforcement authorities, the men did not have
permission to be on the property.

Their deaths followed the electrocution fatalities in Arkansas of two
people attempting to strip copper wire from utility poles. According
to news reports, the price of copper has skyrocketed driven partially
by the demand for copper for telecommunications transmission. One
report says that the problem has gotten so out of hand that the
Arkansas state government has passed three bills that crack down on
the theft of scrap metal.

Despite continued upgrades to fibre optic systems, copper is still in
heavy use for telecommunications systems, worldwide and the thieves
know it.

European MF experiments

Since the beginning of 2005 the German telecommunication authorities have
licensed a propagation study experiment on medium wave MF.

The first license for an experimental station on 440 kHz +/- 100 Hz was
issued to Walter, DJ2LF under the callsign DI2AG.

In May 2006, Geri, DK8KW got the second license to operate under callsign
DI2BO at his home location in Peine near Hannover, locator JO52BH.

Early in 2007 the experimental radio licenses were extended to a second
frequency. Besides 440 kHz also 505.1 kHz +/- 100 Hz may now be used.

This frequency falls into the frequency range of the experimental radio
group with the callsign WD2XSH in the U.S.

Also, the Swedish authorities have issued one license for this frequency
range. This frequency is also very close to the new UK amateur radio band
501 to 504 kHz which was issued recently on an experimental basis.

DI2BO currently transmits in QRSS3 interrupted by CW identification.

For the time being the beacon will remain on air continuously on 505.015 kHz.

Reception reports are welcome, either via DK8KW or direct. Correct
reception reports will be confirmed by a special QSL card.

Grand plans for new DX country dropped

The Hutt River Province Principality announced two years ago plans to begin
short-wave broadcasts and also seek amateur radio DXCC entity status.

Not heard of it? Well this self-proclaimed independent territory on
Australia's mainland is located just north of Geraldton, Western Australia
and began in 1970.

The Royal Amateur Radio Society was formed as a body to represent the
interests of amateur radio on the Hutt River Province. It was full steam
ahead seeking United Nations, IARU and ITU recognition.

Special Hotel Five prefix callsigns were being made available to inaugural
members of the Royal Amateur Radio Society.

ARRL DXCC rules were being quoted as enabling the Principality to qualify
for separate country status. DXers and Contesters were claimed to be eager
to operate from Hutt River.

However today it is all but a memory, no mention is made on the Hutt River
Province website of the former radio plans.

A source close to the ruler of the Hutt River Province, Prince Leonard,
reveals he's gone totally cold on the radio ideas and is now very busy
engineering a pyramid in his Principality.

ANTENNA NEWS

Fractal antenna the size of a rice grain, more has come to light since we
first brought news of this many months back.

In press release on 6 March 2007 the Spanish wireless antenna company
Fractus released a 2.4GHz fractal antenna that is the size of a grain
rice. The following is a summary of the press release.

Fractus, the pioneer developer of fractal antenna technology, has set
a new standard for antenna miniaturisation with the launch of its
smallest antenna for the ISM 2.4GHz band.

The 3,7mm by 2mm Micro Reach Xtend antenna is the size of a single
grain of rice, providing device designers with significantly more
available space to enable new multimedia applications or reducing the
space needed within devices.

The miniature antenna was designed using Fractus' patented fractal
antenna technologies and developed especially for Bluetooth headsets
and mobile handsets. It supports all standards working at the 2.4GHz
ISM band, including Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Using fractal geometry with
its extremely economical use of space, Fractus has created a solution
that offers the maximum performance-to-space ratio as well as reduced
costs.

REWIND - A LOOK BACK IN HISTORY
(Will McGhie VK6UU is WIA National Historian)

Radio Yesteryear is a group of volunteers dedicated to preserving the
history of radio in Australia.

Current project is the history of early A.M. broadcasters from 1920 to 39.

During their research, it quickly became obvious that our early
broadcasting industry was actually started by licensed amateur operators
with experimental broadcast licenses. In addition, many of these early
amateurs became the first engineers, and established most of the early
commercial and A.B.C. stations.

Radio Yesteryea seek your cooperation in assisting them with information
that you may have on these pioneering amateurs.

As their research is actually on broadcast stations, (bless their lil triodes)
they have decided that amateurs

Must have held an Experimental Broadcast License.

Must have broadcast between 200 Khz and 1600 KHz.

Must have broadcast speech and music.

RadioYesterYear are especially keen to obtain a copy of an article entitled
"50 Golden Years of Broadcasting in Australia: the Amateur Contribution".
