Default Yaesu-857 great for power-line noise locater

.....................
My Yaesu FT857-D worked great to locate a power-line noise in less than an hour.
Its programmable features include AM, RF-gain, and AGC-off options on all bands.
I dug out an old 4-element 2M Yagi from past days and quickly located the noisey
ower-pole in someone's back yard on another street more than a block away.
I was able to point toward the noisey pole from three surrounding directions,
and using the RF-gain was able to attenuate out all noise from other directions.
The Power Company soon came out and verified the problem by shaking the pole and
other probing. (however, they may wait until the ground freezes harder to get
their truck in there).
I used a small air-compressor which has a lead-acid battery to power
the 857 transceiver. I left the microphone attached, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that
you securely protect the XMIT button on the mike, because when I went back the
second day to verify my find, I somehow damaged my transceiver and have now sent it
back to Yaesu for repair. The second day, I had a 16" whip on the UHF/VHF and a
160M loopstick on the HF. I can only speculate that the XMIT button got
accidentally pushed and caused something wild to happen. Resetting the CPU's as
mentioned in the book did not help, and some serious damage was done, causing
several functions to fail.
