Here's what radio insiders are thinking.

In the past, national shows have been the exception in radio, rather than
the rule.
They’re about to be the rule.
I predict that half of America’s morning drive jocks will soon be replaced
by 10 or 12 syndicated morning shows beamed in from somewhere else. This
will happen in other dayparts as well.
Frankly, I’m in favor of it.
Wait! I hear the voices of broadcasters clamoring, “But radio is local. Our
listeners want local. Syndication is anti-radio.”
I respond, "Listen to the people of your town. Are they saying, 'We don’t
want Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, American Idol, and Lost! We want
the local TV shows?'”
"Are they saying, 'We don’t want Spiderman, Pirates of the Caribbean, and
Lord of the Rings in our theaters! We want the local movies?'”
"Are they saying, 'We don’t want Rush Limbaugh and Howard Stern, we want a
local political pundit and a local shock jock?'”
Ten years ago, radio’s consolidators cut costs by cutting the fat. Then,
when pressured for more profits, they did the only thing they knew to do;
they cut deeper, but this time into muscle. Radio was crippled. Occasionally
they cut arteries and radio stations began dying. Wall Street prices dropped
cold and hard, icy hail on a barren landscape.
There were plenty of heroic efforts in the emergency room. Not all radio
group heads were selfish. Not all were shortsighted and stupid. I’ve watched
from the sidelines as good men and women did the best they could under
impossible circumstances.

Now radio is going private again. Deconsolidation has begun. The age of
syndication is upon us.

Don’t be afraid of it.

I like NPR. In Jacksonville Fl, we have a great NPR station. It's talk, with
national host's but they're also provide more local content than any of the
commerical stations do. Besides you can actually listen.. I like Rush but
every day it's the same thing. Dems & libs suck! it's every day.. Same for
Hanity the same thing every day

I've heard the NPR station out of Jacksonville, when I was
vacationing in St. Augustine. It IS a most listenable station. Not great
morning radio, but a lot better than the local morning zoos on the
commercial stations. Even the syndicated morning shows get a little
tired, and mighty contrived of late.


Whoopi Goldberg came to the Windy, and a highly rated Melissa Forman
got the boot to make room for Whoopi. And it sucked. Seg two records,
blather for 15 minutes. Not like she said anything of particular
interest...unusual given her background. And she said nothing that
wasn't of interest to Chicago. Just the same generic blather the other
syndicated morning shows offered.

Whoopi didn't last long, and Melissa was invited back. Now, I'm not a
big fan of Melissa Forman, but dammit, at least she knows and
understands Chicago, and can relate to us as someone who lives here.
Whoopi simply didn't relate to Chicago. And her lack of success here
demonstrated how important that is.

I don't think local morning radio is necessarily doomed. At least,
not everywhere. And, in time, local manglement will come to realize that
if you're going to have local-local-local sales emphasis, you're going
to have to have local programming.

David Eduardo is big on reminding us that in the 'Golden Age,' Radio
was networked across the country. And people tuned in to the same shows
at the same time, nationwide. But with the demise of the 1-A's, and the
FCC's mandate that Radio coverage be local-local-local, the trend to
return to network Radio as we've had it, is contrary to every stated
purpose of FCC.

In the end what you get, is locally protected contours that are about
Sales. And nothing else.

I dont know if y'all can pick up WJNT News Talk 1180 AM or 103.FM from
Jackson,Mississippi or not, maybe they have one of those Bitcaster (will
somebody explain to me how Bitcasters work?) thingys so y'all can listen
in on y'alls computerys once in a while, whatever.I think it's a really
good shew.Well, mostly about Mississippi thingys those local WJNT talk

I stopped listening to talk radio some time ago. I can't get WJNT at
night and I am approxamently 40 miles from Jackson, Ms and I got tired
of listening to Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingram, and Sean Hannity during
the day. I sometimes get my fill of Sean Hannity arguing with Alen
Colmes on FNC. I listen to K-Love on FM100.9 in Jackson which is good
Christian Radio.

Good for busuness - what a ****ing joke! Terrestrial Radio is
embarrassing itself with HD Radio!

What is the name of that North South running road/street/drive just East
of WJNT, that google map thingy, I zeroed in on that as much as I could
with WebTV, but I couldn't quite make it out.Is it Flynn Drive? I have a
Jackson city map here, I could figure out how far in a straight line
(more or less) West I am from WJNT, or if that is their transmitter
tower? I couldn't hardly pick up WJNT last night either.Maybe I had
bumped the tuning know on my radio and didn't notice.I will get my old
real good battery powered AM FM Panasonic portable radio tonight and try
again when doggy takes me out in the front yard for a few minutes.
