In the news today: THE SARL VHF/UHF FM CONTEST ON 5 JUNE THE AMSAT SA DUAL BAND 70 CM/2 M YAGI MARK II NOW AVAILABLE and THE MIDLANDS ARC FIELD DAY Stay tuned for more information on these and other interesting news items. THE SARL VHF/UHF FM CONTEST ON 5 JUNE The second SARL VHF/UHF FM Contest runs from 12:00 to 16:00 UTC (14:00 to 18:00 CAT) on Saturday 5 June with activity on 6 and 2 metres and 70 cent imetres. Contacts must be two-way point to point. Stations must exchange s ignal reports as well as their full six-digit Maidenhead locator. Stations can claim one point per kilometre for a contact they worked. There is als o a Grid Multiplier. Distances are calculated automatically when using the SARL VHF/UHF Log sheet provided on the SARL contest page. Log sheets must be submitted by 23:59 CAT on Sunday 13 June 2021 by e-mail to sarlvhfuhfc ) . Read the rules on page 50 of the 2021 SARL Blue Book. THE SARL VHF WORK GROUP The SARL VHF Work Group had their monthly meeting on Thursday evening 27 M ay. The Bethlehem beacon ZS0BET is working very well and there are again i nteresting reports coming in about the performance of the beacon, with s ome strong signals being reported at unexpected hours of the day, like 0 3:00 in the morning. It is also being reported by amateurs who are just us ing a simple vertical mobile antenna. The previous CW only beacon was heard in unexpected places, but with the new next generation beacon platform that also generates a digital signal using PI4 mode, we now, not only have the advantage of being able to hear the beacon at a much lower signal to noise level, but we now also have the ability to monitor and record the beacon 24/7, 365 days of the year and you do not even need to be at your radio. The VHF Work Group is now requesting that all amateurs, who have the abi lity to operate on the digital modes and have an all mode VHF radio or a S DR receiver to monitor the beacon. All that you need to do is keep your ra dio switched on and tuned to 144.424 USB while feeding the audio from your radio to your computer's sound card and the PI-RX software will do the re st. The software automatically records the decoded PI4 signal in a log fil e. Please rename a copy of the log file with your call sign and grid locat or and send it to ) . PI-RX is a small program that runs on computers with Microsoft Windows 7 o r later and Microsoft .Net 4.0 installed. Recommended minimum computing po wer is 1 GHz clock and 512 MB RAM. PI-RX also requires that your PC be syn chronized to either an online time server (e.g., NTP), GPS, or other synchronization devices. The PI-RX program and more information can be ob tained from the website of Bo Hanson OZ2M at https://sarl.us5.list-manage ..com/track/click?u'b05a8cba9589bf8d019e5d3&idž4b70d5af&eœe7bd 785b. Here you will find the install files as well as a link to the m anual for the PI-RX software. THE AMSAT SA DUAL BAND 70 CM/2 M YAGI MARK II NOW AVAILABLE AMSAT SA has launched Mark II of its dual band 70 cm/2 m handheld beam ant enna with a new, easier to hold handle and improved coaxial terminations .. The Yagi has been retuned for maximum performance in the amateur radio 2 m and 70 cm satellite bands. The coax cable is terminated crimped brass l ugs instead of being soldered making it environmentally more robust. The d riven element has been adjusted to accommodate the change in the connectio n. More about the Yagi. The antenna has a 50-ohm designed driver. The Yagi has a unique element called an 'Open Sleeve' which is a director very clo se to the driven element. The driven element is sized for 2 m. When operat ing on 70 cm the 'Open Sleeve' acts as part of the driven element on 70 cm (the third harmonic of 2 m). The original concept was developed in 1946 by Dr J T Bolljahn of the Stanf ord Research institute but was not introduced into amateur radio until the 1950s. The AMSAT SA version is based on a design by DK7ZB with modificati ons by WB5CXC. The first South African version was a collaboration between Guy Eales, ZS6GUY and Gary Immelman, ZS6YI. It was developed for YOTA 2018 where young people successfully used the antenna operating satellite s using hand-held transceivers. The mechanical structure was redesigned by Gary Immelmann ZS6YI. A choke a round the boom was added to isolate the antenna from the coax and reduce t he effect human contact has on the antenna. A handle was added on the boom end which makes it more comfortable to hold and further isolates the ante nna from the handler. The AMSAT SA Yagi is manufactured in one of Gary Imm elmann's factories in Vereeniging. It has two elements on 145 MHz and 3 el ements on 435 MHz. For its size, the antenna has excellent gain: 145 MHZ: 4.12 dBd or 6.3 d Bi and 435 MHz: 6.23 dBd or 8.4 dBi. The Yagi is broadband with measured S WR being almost flat over the entire bands. The antenna is plug and play , no tools are needed except for soldering on a connector to suit the ap plication. It comes complete in a carry bag with full instructions. This a ntenna can be assembled and dissembled in minutes. The price of the MKII Y agi is R400 for AMSAT SA and SARL members. Non-members pay R500. The couri er charge is R120 (Postnet to Postnet). Nie-lede betaal R500. Die koerier heffing beloop R120 (Postnet na Postnet ). Kry 'n kwotasie vir ander koerier opsies.
