Default Nobody's smiling at Air America

http://medianetwork.blogspot.com/

Saturday, May 08, 2004

The liberal US talk radio network Air America may have been set up by
comedian and author Al Franken, but not many of its staff are smiling this
weekend. Instead, they're coming to terms with the latest crisis to hit the
fledgling network: the resignation on Thursday of its chairman and vice
chairman. The departures of Evan Cohen and his investment partner Rex
Sorensen came just a week after the company announced that co-founder Mark
Walsh had stepped down as CEO to take a smaller role at the company, and
that David Logan had been replaced as head of programming. Neither Cohen nor
Sorensen would comment or give a reason for their decision. Company
president Jon Sinton was not returning calls yesterday either.

Air America has been plagued by problems since it launched on 31st March.
After just two weeks on the air, a dispute with a business partner led to
Air America's programming being pulled from stations in Chicago and Los
Angeles. The network was later restored in Chicago, but the company said it
was looking for a new business partner there.

They're playing ads, so there's Revenue coming in;
- Probably a cash flow problem..
Most of the talent are probably syndicated ,so, for them, it's just a late
check..!

The Associated Press reports more top executives at the new liberal network,
Air America Radio, have left the operation.

Evan Cohen, co-founder and his investment partner, Vice-Chairman Rex Sorensen
are both stepping down from the board.

The Associated Press says both Cohen and Sorensen declined to say what they
would do with their financial stake in the company.

The Los Angeles Times reports:

"Company President Jon Sinton told the Chicago Tribune...that Cohen resigned
because other investors weren't happy with how he handled a financial dispute
with affiliate stations in Los Angeles and Chicago, which resulted in the
network's going off the air in those cities, with no replacements yet lined
up."

The Times also reports, "Air America also missed its payroll this week by one
day, for what insiders called technical reasons."

The exit of Cohen and Sorensen continue a string of departures.

In late April, Mark Walsh, stepped down as CEO of Air America Radio and its
initial Program Director, David Logan, was put on "administrative leave".

That wasn't an in-studio problem. It sounded fine on Sirius while
this was happening. It was an over-the-air deal at WLIB only.

Does Air America have their own person at the controls at WLIB? When Air
America was taken off the air in Chicago the first time, news reports said
Multicultural Broadcasting kicked out an Air America employee and changed
the locks.

I'm glad to hear that.
