The poor individual above was found hunched over a typical piece of WWII era gear known as a Hallicrafters SX-28 receiver. Even though heavily sedated by doctors he managed to crawl several city blocks in a semi conscious state to the object fueling his neurological disorder. The stress took a heavy toll on his physical well-being, he may never fully recover. What causes the symptoms? The cause has not been definitely established, although current research presents considerable evidence that the disorder stems from the abnormal desire for obsolete electronic equipment fueled by a metabolism of at least one brain chemical (neurotransmitter) called dopamine. The individual when seeing or even in the vicinity of a piece of obsolete electronic equipment will become excited and the impulse to buy (or even steal in extreme cases) the electronic equipment or apparatus becomes overwhelming. Undoubtedly other neurotransmitters are also involved. Is it inherited? Studies suggest that OES is inherited as a dominant gene that may produce different symptoms in different people. A person with OES has about a 50% chance of passing it on to his/her children, however it may not appear as a recognizable disorder to that extent. In some cases, OES may not be inherited, and is identified as sporadic OES because the cause is unknown. Can people with OES delay or suppress their symptoms? Postponement or substitution of OES symptoms is a skill that few people with the disease are able to master. It requires considerable energy and concentration to inhibit the desire for obsolete or antique electronics for even a few minutes. Family members, teachers and co-workers must be understanding and compassionate when this cannot be accomplished and the individual needs a repair or fix. To avoid embarrassment and ridicule, in certain social situations some people with OES often try to hide their symptoms by camouflaging there test equipment and tools. Symptoms may however emerge more explosively when they arrive home or are able to shelter themselves in private surroundings where they feel more comfortable and have access to the apparatus or equipment fueling the disorder. This phenomenon can create a diagnostic problem for physicians who often do not observe OES symptoms during examination. Some doctors have had the unfortunate experience of having their patients with OES dismantle or test their electronic medical equipment when left unsupervised. Never leave a OES sufferer alone with any electronic device even if it's a modern piece of equipment. Some types of people with OES have what is termed as Valvestate Compulsiveness and these individuals feel that the electron tube is superior to the modern transistor and in extreme cases have been known to try and retrofit all the modern electronic equipment in their grasp in an effort to transform their surroundings to a more primitive technological time. Is OES a psychiatric disorder? No, OES is a neurological disorder. Secondary psychological problems (e.g., depression or mumbling Ohms law repeatedly) may however arise from persistent difficulties in coping with the disorder and society's reaction to its unique symptoms. Some behavioral difficulties which may be a part of the syndrome (i.e., Obsesed with Radio Shacks lack of radio related componants, compulsiveness and aggressive outbursts related to electronics in general) can also cause significant adjustment problems. In some cases psychological counseling may be needed to help a person with OES adjust, come to terms with OES and build coping skills. How is OES diagnosed? The diagnosis is made by observing the symptoms and by evaluating the history of their onset. No blood analysis, x-ray or other type of medical test exists to identify OES. A doctor may however order an EEG, CAT scan or certain blood tests to rule out other ailments that could be confused with OES. Again never leave the patient alone around electronic equipment. Is there a cure? Not yet, Education of the individual, family and friends on the disorder and learning management techniques can help reduce symptoms. Electronic placebos such as replicas of old radios have shown to be ineffective in helping wean the OES sufferer off valvestate and into the modern IC/Transistor technology. Some hybrid electronic equipment such as music or audio amplification designs are showing some promise. Can people with OES lead normal lives? Unfortunately No. Is there ever a remission? Some people experience periods where the symptoms seem to disappear but it seems more relates to finances than desire to ignore their desiese, others experience a marked improvement after high voltage electric shock therepy. How would a typical case of OES be described? The term typical cannot be applied to OES. The expression of symptoms covers a spectrum from very mild to very severe. OES is an individual and complex disorder. How is OES treated? There are several things which can reduce the symptoms of OES for many people, one of which is the wife/husband or significant other. Unless symptoms substantially interfere with a person’s life, spouse interaction may not be necessary. None of the things currently available for treatment of OES will entirely eliminate all symptoms. Instead symptoms may be reduced, sometimes substantially, but they will continue to wax and wane, and they will commonly appear more pronounced during stressful periods. How many people have OES? We don't know for sure but recent research suggests as many as 1 in 200 people. Now with the booming internet it's easy to see this behavior and it's effects on those that suffer from this debilitating disease. Certain Usenet news groups such as rec.antiques.radio+phono or rec.radio.amature.boatanchors and vintage electronic websites where these people congregate can be seen and the dialog that emanates from these unfortunate individuals and sites is alarming. Laws are being worked on to shut down these breeding grounds of sickness but on a positive note, it's good to know where these people are at. |
