Default New music in the NYC area

Years ago, the NY area had some damn good broadcast radio. We had 2
classic rock stations (though they swicthed; for the most part, it was
WNEW, then either K-Rock, or the original WAPP, before it sold out for
urban music), some pop stations that could be relied on to play some
decent songs (as long as they were popular, and when we didn't have to
listen to annoying hip DJ's) and some pretty good "alternative music".

Times have changed. Z-100 jumped onto the hip-hop bandwagon, and it
looks like that's not changing back anytime soon; WAXQ (104.3) has
become the new WNEW (with "2 for Tuesday" and "Get the Led out, with
Carole Miller); PLJ has become the new Adult CHR station, and K-Rock
seems to have gone all-talk. Except for the weekends, there doesn't
seem to be any music at all being played on K-rock, not even the
graying collection of "classic rock" standards that we can get from
AXQ.

What hurts the most is the loss of WLIR, 92.7, which took the
"alternative route" when it was really alternative. They sold their
western LI transmitter to some Spanish network. While I couldn't stand
much of what they played on LIR, it was still a reliable source of
music unspoiled by top-40 play-it-to-death programming, or at least
music that was really new. Now the only way I know of to get new music
in the NYC area is on AXQ on Sunday night - "The Underground Garage"
followed by "Little Steven's Underground Garage".

Or am I missing something on broadcast radio? Suggestions warmly
appreciated.
