Its about damn time. CW is outdated and has been an impedement to new
hams for years.

With the new frequency allotments we should be in line for some
interesting times in ham radio.

I noticed that the entry level licenses have been code test free for
quite awhile now. I see the dumbing down of the ham radio hobby as
just another form of welfare, rewarding folks who have no initiative
or who aren't motivated or committed to get off their fat asses and
work for something that will benefit them. My only hope is that the
written exams continue to stay in place to filter out folks who are
too darn stupid to read and write.

Amen. When organizations like MARS can't forward a message because nobody
took the time to learn code, then and only then will the significance of
this mistake be felt.

I hope organizations like MARS make CW a requirement for membership.

Who you calling stupid? It's not about the money. How does the FCC make
any money by eliminating cw? It's about this country following in the
footsteps of other countries that dropped the cw requirements.

While there are a few who can not demonstrate enough cw proficency to get
an hf endorsement, there are 1000 behind each one complaining cw is to
hard. Oh boo hoo, to difficult or to lazy. I choose the later.

I thought the no-code tech was a good idea because it gave you a taste of
what the hobby is about. In this area there was a 2 meter repeater cross
linked to a 10 meter repeater. Years ago as a VE, I use to do parlor
tricks bringing up the link, talking to someone 1000 or more miles away
and watching the students jaws drop.

I understand what it feels like to to be unable to demonstrate enough cw
proficency for an upgrade. I'm stuck at 13wpm, can't do it any faster,
but at least I was able to do 5wpm and then with a lot of hard work I
managed to raise the bar to 13wpm and get my General Class.

Frankly, I don't do much cw because of a physical limitation, but when
you NEED as in an emergency to get a message through, cw in some cases is
the only way.

The FCC could and should change the ruling. I think demonstrating some
form of proficiency at 3-5 wpm would be fair. Do you realize how slow
that is?

What's the point of cooking steak if your to lazy to chew it?
