There was a "bulletin" (8.5x11 sheet of paper) on the window of the
ticket sales office stating in LARGE RED LETTERS that Hamvention *will* be at Hara again next year. Trying to squelch any rumors about condos, etc, like we've heard for the last 2 or 3 years, I guess. |

This same announcement was made over the intercom system to all at Dayton on Saturday several times. This was my 5th trip to Dayton - Hara is getting old and tired and grungy. And they're not investing in "paint'n wallpaper". Probably just a matter of time. |
If you can get DARA to move the convention to Vegas more power to you!
Since DARA are the folks that do all the work they are the ones that say where it happens. Also just vecause Dayton is the mother of all hamfestsMOHF does not mean its the national cnvention, it just plays one on TV -- If I am tired now, why do I have to RETIRE later? |

John k9uwa Forgot one... the Dayton Convention Buro .. sets the prices that the Hotels Charge for Hamvention as well as all other Conventions.. 100 bucks plus for a Holiday Inn Express ... is a little on the high side! John k9uwa It was sad to see so many empty booths inside and out. Even some of the regulars like Mosley, HAL, QRZ DX/DX Magazine, etc. were not there this year. Surplus Sales of Nebraska had only a small token booth instead of their usual big one. The big tent out in the flea market that had several aisles of vendors was not there this year. The DX and Contest forums that used to hold a big standing room only crowd were relegated to a small "meeting" room. Regular forums like the excellent "mobile radio installation and noise reduction" session were not held there this year. Sad..... |

Folks that keep tolling the death bell for ham radio are just helping ham radio to die faster.... Unfortunatly, there is nothing you can do. You can't create interest in youth with more modern, advanced technology all around. Roland |

I didn't have any 3 or 4 night minimum either. This is only my second year at Dayton, so I can't comment on any "glory days" but: The flea had a lot more ham radio oriented stuff this year than last year. Last year I wasn't sure if I was at a festival for vintage 486 computer sales and 1985 Motorola UHF handi-talkies or a Hamfest. The flea was more interesting from a Ham outlook this year IMO. Hara was doing a better job on the rest rooms compared to last year. probably 50 percent less stink. But Hara is without doubt getting old and run down. Presuming a person is keeping their eyes open inside the building, it is obvious to see. I can understand DARA's loyalty, but if Hara doesn't do some serious upgrading soon, Dayton Hamfest will start to appear as old and run down as the facilities it is held in. The Hara parking lot where the flea is held is pretty sad. A couple more years, and the macadam will be gone. You really have to watch your step to keep from tripping on the potholes and non-level repairs. Those mud wrestling pits....erm... parking lots beside the building are pretty awful. I park at the Derelict mall and find that to be a pretty good alternative. But, I'll be there next year if all goes well. - Mike KB3EIA - |

My impressions of Dayton this year:
* Yes the vendor flea market attendance definitely appeared to be down * The rain on Saturday didn't help but what really doesn't help is when the vendors pack up early and leave .. which causes fewer buyers to venture outside ... which causes more vendors to pack up and leave ... which causes fewer buyers to venture outside .., etc, etc. I was out there on Saturday shopping and the vendors that bailed out got exactly $0.00 of my money. * The flea market vendors are not supposed to leave early but many of them get past the lax security. Note to DARA - its only a matter of time until someone gets run over in the flea market lot during the next rainshower & high-speed bailout by vendors who have been sitting in their truck drinking beer all day. Guess who they're going to sue first ??? * Note 2 to DARA. Its obvious that many of the flea market spots are simply parking spots for people with nothing to sell but who are too lazy to haul their big fat asses from and to a real parking spot. This makes the flea market much bigger than it needs to be and means that the overwhelmingly out-of-shape buyers will be able to make fewer rounds of the flea market and hence spend less money with the real vendors ! * Note 3 to DARA. You're doing a wonderful job. Keep up the good work. * Note 4 to DARA. If the event was held twice a year you can be sure I would still take the 10 hour drive and attend both. * All in all I had a fine time and came home with some new goodies. * There were definitely fewer boatanchors to be had in the flea market this year. * There are always complaints about the Hara facility. I have always assumed that the Hara arena is used because its the cheapest and most convenient facility available. If it was moved elsewhere and DARA had to increase the admission by 10 cents to cover it, I'm afraid there are a large group of whiney hams that would scream bloody murder and refuse to to ever attend again. So lets leave it at Hara unless there really is a better place for it. John |

I have to use a 3 wheel cart because I cannot walk more than a few yards
without pain. I hope you never become handicapped physically - We already know about your mental state. I bet you wanted to be a bully on the playground but were too little and now you think your not-so-smart comments make you a man - well it doesn't - ps I did NOT attend Dayton..... wrote in message ... I agree.. You need to seek some psychological help man.. you just make fun
of people to make yourself seem like a bigger person. someday you'll have a condition and you'll know what it's like. Treat everyone like you would like to be treated.
