Perhaps you mean transceiver
A combination of the words TRANSmitter and reCEIVER
A combination of a transmitter and a receiver having a common frequency
control and usually enclosed in a single package. Extensively used in
two-way radio communications,

Give us the make and model number and maybe we can help figure out what
bands it works on.

For many transceivers - you need a license to transmit.

Ah an Alinco transceiver - nice gift
It's an Amateur Radio unit

You can listen on it
BUT you CAN NOT transmit with it until you get an Amateur Radio license
See URL:
http://www.arrl.org/hamradio.html

There can be severe penalties for transmitting without a license.
