Default FRS RADIO CONVERSION?

hello all,

With all these super cheap FRS radios around, is it possible to
reprogram/convert these trancievers to the 440 Amateur band?? I
realize they would be probably simplex but seems if they can make
these radios that cheap, why cant they do the same thing for the
amateur 440 band??

Type acceptance, number of channels, VCO... All those factor in the
price of a radio.

What really factors in to the lower price of FRS radios is that
millions are sold compared to the thousands of ham HTs sold worldwide.

no there is not. The FCC made that quite clear that they cannot be
modified in any way

I believe that would be to modify them for use within the FRS/GMRS bands..
as far as amateur radio rules are concerned, we are allowed to modify any
radio to operate within the amateur bands so long as it conforms to basics
such as modulation levels and quality of emissions.
