I have made the trip to the local Ham Store and after viewing all the
rigs that they had on the shelves I have limited my choice down to the following three rigs listed below. If there are any owners of the Radios listed I would love to have your input about your radio and would you buy the same again? Also, if there is a person, I would appreciate hearing from someone that has owned one, two or three of the radios listed and how you would compare the lot based upon your operating experience. Also if you had a specific gripe about one? Thanks Rig #1 IC-746PRO by Icom HF, 50M, 2 Mdeters Rig #2 TS-2000S by Kenwood Rig #3 Mark-V (FT-1000MP) Field by Yaesu I have obtained my impressions of each by listening at the controls of each and while two have VHF and one VHF & UHF while the last is HF only While I am not going to be making a decision for a while I cherish any input from current or past owners on their experiences. About the same as asking what make car do you drive and why.

I would not waste my money on ham equipment. Get a CB. Ham radio is
dying. The Yaesu is the most bullet proof in terms of contesting and nearby
stations. But, most operators do not need that. If you like to get on the vhf and uhf bands, the other two are a better choice. If you are interested in 2 or 6 meter sideband, then these rigs make a lot of sense, since you cannot get an inexpensive ssb rig for either band. But, if you only get on fm, then the extra expense for the vhf bands may not make sense. QST had reviews on both. And, cb is really dead. 73, Colin K7FM |

At least if you have a ham rig, if ham does die, you have a nice clean 100
watt signal on the CB bands without an "afterburner" or other nonsense. 8-) jjj wrote: I would not waste my money on ham equipment. Get a CB. Ham radio is dying. For my money, I'd buy the 746Pro (again), unless I could get another
756ProII for somewhere the same money... I like the medium-ish (not as large as some HF radios, but still 5" high and 12" wide) desktop packaging, the 50Mhz and 144 Mhz bands, and even though the "spectrum scope" feature is static and you can't listen to the radio for the few seconds it takes to make a scan, it is really nice to be able to dial back and forth from the center frequency to spikes you see on the display. (I really wish I could do this with my 756ProII !!) I've mostly operated Icom since I got back into the hobby about 5 years ago, and currently have an Icom 751, a 751a, the 746Pro and a 756ProII. I think the 746Pro is as sensitive as the 751/751a, which are well known for superior sensitivity, and the 746Pro has some of the DSP features that are only coming into play with other manufacturers. Overall, the 746Pro is a good, solid rig, and won't disappoint you either in normal or reasonable contest situations. On the other hand, if you were a Die Hard, High Power Contester, your message would be a troll, because you'd have your favorite and nobody would be able to tell you anything you would listen to (that's the way die hard contesters are...) I've also used a few Kenwood rigs during Field day, but haven't used the 2000. Overall, the Kenwood rigs worked well, but I got used to having a large display after I got my 746Pro, and I tend to feel like I'm missing something if I don't have one now. This was one of the main reasons I got the 756ProII. Better display, more features (I'm a gadget freak too), and though I would not have admitted to it a year ago, the spectrum display is really fun to use on the Icom radios. (though I really wish the Icom engineers had given us the ability to "freeze" the spectrum display on the 756ProII and scroll back and forth like the 756Pro does.) In short, the 746Pro is still in production, still very popular, and you couldn't go wrong with one. The same could probably be said for the other two radios you are considering. It all comes down to what you are used to, or want to become used to. Once I got the 746Pro, it was difficult to consider anything without a large display. The radio sounds good, is easy to operate, and seems very reliable, despite the trials and tribulations I've put it through, as with all of the other Icom radio's I've owned. Of course, I know a number of other hams that prefer "their brand" of radio as much as I prefer Icom. It's all what you become accustomed to. If you are considering the used market, you can do very well with any of the radios. I bought my current 756ProII on ebay for $1600 including power supply and speaker. Given the chance to buy another one at the same price, I'd jump on it and sell the 746Pro, even knowing that I wouldn't get much more than $1000 for the 746. I just like the extra features and color display that much... Good luck, no matter which of the radios you buy, you should have a great time! --Rick AH7H Gary at McDonough Ga wrote: I have made the trip to the local Ham Store and after viewing all the rigs that they had on the shelves I have limited my choice down to the following three rigs listed below. Hi Gary,
I own an Icom 746Pro, and I like it very much. I'm not a contester or a "big gun" DXer, just a regular Joe. I work almost entirely CW. The 746Pro's DSP system works really well. The filtering is excellent, the noise reduction and notch filtering are a Godsend, the big LCD is easy to read, and I use the Band Scope function constantly (something I thought was a useless "fluff" item when I was shopping for a new rig!). I have no experience with the other two on your list, so I can't offer a comparison. For the price, I think the 746Pro is one of the best buys in an HF+VHF rig on the market right now. 73, Dean K5DH In article , says...
