Is there any difference in the receive quality of a HF transceiver rig
versus a dedicated sw receiver. the only direct comparision i can think

which may be a bad example, is the IC-781 vs. the IC-R9000. Thanks for
the
input.
He http://www.dxing.info/equipment/icom_ic756_plimmer.dx you will find
what you are asking for, a side by side performance test between one of
the best transceiver around, the Icom 756 pro III and the famous SW
receiver, the Drake R8B. Atagrasin

I have seen that link some time back.
Not sure if the author mentioned it or not but the PRO II ( I own one) is
deaf on LF. I measured MDS at -95dBm at 137 KHz- my band of interest. Now
using a Palomar LF--80M converter. In this combination, the MDS is -129
dBm.
Icom places a -10dB pad and an LPF in the line below 1.6MHz. Believe the PRO
and PRO III are the same topology.

Conditions were decent last night, not great. With the Palomar in line,
South American and Puerto Rican NDB's were rolling in.
