What's the proper size allen wrench?

1/8" fits mine.

I went and bought a metric set. Turns out 1.5mm fits perfectly well in
my case.

In order to get to the push buttons you're trying to work on, you have to
remove the face panel which swings down from the front of the rig once you
remove the necessary screws. You might find it's a little rough going cuz
things are pretty tightly packed in there. I've been in there to replace
the meter lamp twice in the past 15 years and it's tight.

Well, I did remove the front panel, and it was relatively easy to
get to the PCB that has the switches.

These buggers are a paint to work on, however. They're membrane
switches. I carefully lifted the clear mylar, and slowly removed
each membrane, and cleaned them off individually. I also cleaned
the copper pads on the PCB.

I'm taking a break from all of that as I type this...

You'd do well to see of you can locate a service manual. It'll make the
task easier. I learned the trial and error way to get in there.

I have it, it came in the mail today, after I was about 1/2 way
into the disassembly...

Your comment about the lamp is making me wonder if I should do a
preemptive replacement.
