I already have a better radio - an FT-100D, in the car, but I'll be switching
cars soon and need something with a smaller head, and I really don't NEED all
the features of the FT-100D in the car. That's why I just want an FM mobile.
The TM-G707A, which I've owned in the past, in a good one with a compact head,
so I may have to settle for that, although I rarely use 70cm.
That's similar to the sort of issue I have with using a combined
HF/VHF mobile in my van. It'd be nice in many ways to have all of the
bands in one radio, but the heads on the allbanders are both bigger,
and a lot more complex than on the VHF or VHF/UHF radios.
I considered replacing my TM-G707A with something like an FT-857, but
decided against it partly for this reason. On the TM-G707A I can
switch transmitter powers at the push of a button (and have a choice
of three power levels to use), while the FT-857 requires diving into a
submenu to adjust the power. Similar issues exist elsewhere in the
user interface.
