Check out the Ramsey stuff as they are fun to build, don't know
if they are the top of the line receivers but heck you can get
an education on how the things work.

If you mainly want to learn electronics, you could go to ebay
(shortwave radio) and look for a used Heathkit receiver with the
manual. You could then dismantle it in the correct order, learning
about each component and module as you go. Then, using the manual, you
could reassemble it in order. This would give you an education in radio
for very little money, and if you got it back together , you would have
a pretty good radio.
