about 6months ago my normally low noise level has been plagued with
some noise

it's on and off about 30sec to 1 min on and maybe 1min off but

it seems to take a break and might go quite for say 5 min

seems to be on all the bands 160-10 and almost as strong equally

but comes in s7 solid so all but the most strongest stations get

i turned off all the power in my apt via the main breaker and powered
up the rig w/my battery so w/only the rig w/power i still got it same

noise definately comes in stronger w/my roof dipole than say a small
vertical whip in the apt (i am on 4th fl of 13)

i barly hear the noise w/my indoor whip however i also barley hear any
singnals inside given all the concreate and steel mesh

so the question:

Obviously i need to hunt around for the noise whats the best way to
track this down unf i don't have a spectrum analyzer

i do have a ft817 but what is the best antenna but make for this? i
can't walk around the block w/anything to big

but am willing to get anything i need as long as it's not too$$

any tips appreciated because i can't realy use the lowbands anymore
really annoying

My noise sniffer is my T90a. I can tune it on AM to any part of the HF
spectrum and if it's close enough to the source of the problem, I can
spot it. And taking the rubber duck down to the 2m/70cm size will
attenuate it even more so I can get a closer fix. Taking the antenna off
altogether gives real close-up detection. And it's not all that
obtrusive, being a handheld.

But good luck getting anyone to do anything about the noise once you find
it. What does work for me (I'm in an urban apartment setting, too, with
commercial properties right outside my window) is my MFJ-1026. It won't
kill all noises but it really does a good job on those that exhibit some
directivity. You can use the supplied telescopic whip with it or put an
external noise antenna on it.
