Default What is this???

Gentlemen, I ask for your assistance in identifing some mystery
"Boxes" that are popping up
in my neighborhood. I can offer you the following, and there are also
pictures:

There are 2 slightly different models, they vary in where the vent is
located.

All boxes have 3 connections: Power, antenna, and some sort of other
connection - phone, or
perhaps fiber.

No one asked the city communications department or the city attorney
for permission to install
these. They also would like to know what they are.

All have a fan inside that is running.

The devices were manufactured or owned by Nextel. (See pics.)

The antenna looks to be 800 Mhz.

Normal cable distribution/line amplifiers don't need antennas.

Given that Nextel is involved, and that they're a cellphone provider
which makes extensive use of 800 MHz spectrum, I would guess that
these are "micro-cell" base stations. These are small-footprint
cellphone bases which are used to improve cellphone connectivity in
areas where the signals from the larger cellphone towers can't reach
(due e.g. to topography, or lack of ability to find a location to put
a good tower), or to provide connectivity into the insides of buildings.

Googling around a bit indicates that Alcatel-Lucent has just recently
announced a new generation of these... their CDMA Base Station 2400.
I have no idea of that's the specific model shown in these pictures.

I agree with Dave. In retrospect, those boxes do look a lot like a
miniature version of the remote "repeater" type cellular stations that the
cell-site operators use. Also, that antenna does look like standard
moderate gain 800MHz antennas.

Terry:

While I can appreciate the citys' interest in these; why would anyone
ever have to get the cities permission? If the device meet/exceeds FCC
specs and "they" obtained the power companies to use their (our) pole
for mounting, it should be out of the cites authority.

Perhaps a call to the power company who maintains the pole would develop
some information?

I have no idea of what this device is; a guess would be the best I could
venture. However, my interest, most likely, meets or exceeds the cites ...

I don't know about the other objects, but in picture #9, the oval object is
a "turning web".
They are used when you have to reverse the direction of a cable, but keep it
on the same line.
The radius of the web is larger than the minimum radius the cable can
handle.
It keeps the wires inside the cable from flexing too much and breaking as
the cables direction changes.
This may or may not be a part of the "mystery box". It is probably part of
the local Telco physical plant.

Thanks for telling what the oval objects are. I have seen them and often
wondered just what they are or what they were for.
