Let’s just stay on the topics of each forum. 73's :) I'm curious how you arrived at the "correctness" of antennae. Miriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Ed., lists both plural forms. Random House Webster's Unabridged Dictionary, Second Ed., explicitly states that antennae is plural for the appendages on insects, and antennas is plural for the electromagnetic device. These different plural usages are by far the most common in my experience. I only occasionally see "antennae" to describe radio antennas, mostly in very old texts or when used by an academic -- or rraa poster -- trying to emphasize his distance from the hoi polloi. On my bookshelf a _Antennas_ (Kraus), _Physical Design of Yagi Antennas_ (Leeson), _HF Antennas for All Locations_ (Moxon), _Antennas and Transmission Lines_ (Kuecken), _Radiowave Propagation and Antennas for Personal Communcations_ (Siwak), _Lines, Waves, and Antennas_ (Brown et al), _Antennas and Waves_ (King and Harrison), _Transmission Lines, Antennas, and Wave Guides_ (King et al), _Directional Broadcast Antennas_ (Layton), and _TV and Other Receiving Antennas_ (Bailey). Other books have "Antennas" in chapter titles, e.g., in _Antenna Engineering Handbook_ (Johnson) we find "Loop Antennas", "Small Antennas", "Microstrip Antennas", "Leaky-Wave Antennas", and so forth. I don't have a single text with "Antennae" in the title, chapter heading, or body. But then, I don't have any entomology texts at all. If "antennae" is to be the "correct" plural for radio antenna, an awful lot of very well known authors and publishers need to be made aware of it. Roy Lewallen, W7EL |

Never aced anything. My scores belong in the Witness Protection Program. While a place to learn and teach and have fun, it is also largely unregulated. So we get a fairly high noise to signal ratio. The best strategy is to just accept that there will be off topic and run-on threads in the newsgroup, and either filter or otherwise ignore them. A general rule of thumb is to post a question, and the first few answers will be the relevant ones. After that all bets are off. Regarding the age thing, It is an excellent hobby/avocation for a retiree or young ham. I got into the ARS later than some, at 46 years old, but it's all good.
