Your thinking is quite correct. I've got one of their wiz bang "Mean
Effective Gain" rated antennas around here somewhere.

When I measured that antenna mounted top dead center on a vehicle the
performance was substantially worse when compared with a ¼-wavelength
mounted on the same vehicle.
