I don't think you can beat the Buddipole with the 817. I have been using one
in various configurations for a couple of years now and have had more fun
with it than any other antenna. I often use a random length wire with the
ZM-2 mini ATU as well, which is great if you need a light weight set up.

I often use half the buddipole mounted on the car as a vertical with my
Yaesu FT-857 and 100W. It is far more efficient than a short mobile whip but
obviously it can't be used when mobile. The Buddipole can be used on 80m if
both coils are used with both arms as a vertical whip with an earth or
radials.
