Default ISP WAP Polarization

My internet service provider has established a wireless access point on top
of a light pole about a mile from the shack. I'm going to TRY and hit it
with a passive repeater (two antennas back to back). I'll use either a
caffeine collinear (coffee can reflector) or a popsicle stick yagi on the
outside and a plain old dipole inside the shack for reradiation.

My isp doesn't have a clue as to whether is WAP is polarized horizontally or
vertically. Does anybody in this ng know for sure whether WAPs or horiz or
vert?

Jim

Hi Jim,

I don't "know," but given that the WA of WAP suggest strongly of
maximum coverage (which is antithetical to horizontal gain antennas
with nulls), vertical polarization would seem a good bet.

This does not limit you to having a vertical gain antenna (with
nulls), in fact it could be a speed advantage (cutting down on phase
errors lowering through-put). Simple enough to tilt your antenna to
find out which orientation does the job (once you know where the base
station is, that is).

Do you know the AP manufacturer?

That being asked, most are vertical, such as Motorola Canopy and Tropos.

I would guess vertical. Most wireless cards or routers for home use
have their antennas vertical. Probably a little easier to make it
omnidirectional too...
