If the poles flip, will that make me a Yankee? Is my Southern heritage at
risk? Will I need to turn my tin foil hat inside out? :) A bit of mental masturbation to think of all the consequences of day to day life if the magnetic poles once again flip... I did in fact do a bit of eyeball rolling during the espousing of some of the theories. "Richard Clark" wrote in message ... Remember, the thing near the Earth's north geo pole _already is_ a _South_
magnetic pole. So it already happened and nobody even noticed! Steve N. k-9-d;c\i "'Doc" wrote in message ... w4jle, Funny you should mentiuon the 'tin' hat, just got in a shipment of 'bipolar' tin hats. On sale soon! 'Doc |

The fact that the earth's magnetic poles have not reversed during human history is only because of the meager time that humans have existed. But it will be interesting to see all the compasses pointing South. -- 73, Cecil http://www.qsl.net/w5dxp -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 100,000 Newsgroups - 19 Different Servers! =----- |

Yea, but the South of a magnet is based on the earth's south/north
relationship, so if earth's magnet field flips, the magnet label would also flip to maintain uniformity since any reference is relative anyway: thus the south will never rise again... Besides the dip-gyrocompass is used for modern navigation and works off of the center of the earth's rotation because the magnetic center is off. Thus if earth's magnetic field reverses, there will be little if any effect on "TRUE" north or south, GPS or navigation except for birds, insects and so on. And they will adapt quickly too. Again, the south will never rise again.... So there!!!!!!! "Ed Price" wrote in message news:9X0vb.18362$cX1.11268@fed1read02... "Tdonaly" wrote in message ... Are you saying the same force that causes the poles to flip will come to my
house and relabel my compass? "Jer" wrote in message ... "The fact that the earth`s magnetic poles have not reversed during human history is only because of the meager time that humans have existed." True. Magnets have 2 poles called north and south in reference to the direction they seek on the earth. Like poles repel and unlike poles attract. Earth`s magnetic field produces an electron and ion flow which protects Earth from the solar wind, turns aside charged cosmic rays, and causes auroras. A magnetosphere turns with the rotation of the planet. The earth`s magnetic poles don`t agree exactly with its geographic poles on its axis of rotation. The magnetic poles slowly circle about the geographic poles by about 0.04-degrees of longitude per year. About every 100,000 years the Earth`s magnetic field reverses, interchanging north and south magnetic poles. So, if the earth keeps on turning as it always has, the magnetic polarities will continue their reversals as throughout history when man did not exist or was too primative to record such events.
