This is accurate.

Clark Reid at KABL told me that he would turn off stereo too if it would
increase the range of the transmitter.

Too bad.

On a good receiver it is a nice sound.

KABL (960) in the San Francisco Bay Area. It appears to be the last one.
KFRC (610) dropped it four years ago. When I called up to ask about it,
they said it would be back. It wasn't. In other words, KFRC lied to me.

KUZZ (AM) and KWAC in Bakersfield still run stereo. KABC in Los
Angeles was lighting the beacon last time I was down there. So was
their Radio Disney outlet, KDIS (the old KRLA, 1110).

You've heard about France Bleu?
Its a 300,000W AM Stereo station which can be heard throughout Europe,
southern England and Ireland!!
And typical licenses are 5,000W!

Richard.

Try WBAP 820 from Ft. Worth, TX. 50KW Non-DA. Last check within a month or
so, still stereo. Other problem: talk format.

More specifically, any 50kw stations or at least something I can pick
up in the US midwest at night? I purchased an AM stereo campatible
tuner about three months ago and have never even seen a hint of stereo
on the AM band.

Given that WJR had broadcast in stereo for some 20 years, this is
hardly an encouraging sign for the status of AM Stereo within the
industry.

For how many of those 20 years has it been a talk station?

Back when I used to listen to it (60's through mid-70's) it had enough

of a
variety of programming to make it worth using stereo, and none was
available. But who needs stereo on a talk station? It's a waste.

Who needs a pathological liar talk show host like "you know who" in

stereo either!
