Grant Paulsen & Danny Rouhier Move To Afternoons At 106.7 The Fan Washington

Posted: 08 Jan 2021 09:11 AM PST
https://radioinsight.com/headlines/2...an-washington/

Entercom Sports 106.7 The Fan WJFK Manassas VA/Washington DC has announced
that midday hosts Grant Paulsen and Danny Rouhier will move to afternoons
starting Monday, January 11.

Paulsen and Rouhier have hosted middays together since 2014. Both joined
the station shortly after its flip to Sports in 2009. Rouhier became a
full-time host in 2010 and has been in middays since 2011. Paulsen served
as Washington Football Team beat reporter for the station before joining
Rouheir in middays in 2014.

The duo fill the timeslot that had been held by Chad Dukes until his exit
in October. Pete Medhurst will serve as interim midday host at the station.

Entercom revealed a revamped weekday programming lineup for 106.7 The Fan
(WJFK-FM) in Washington D.C. As part of the new update, the top-rated
midday team of Grant Paulsen and Danny Rouhier will move to afternoon drive
and will now be heard from 2:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., effective January 11.
Subsequently, the station announces on-air personality Pete Medhurst will
serve as interim midday show host.

“Grant and Danny mix the smartest and most credible sports opinion and
information in Washington with their own unique personalities and humor,”
said Ivy Savoy-Smith, Senior Vice President and Market Manager, Entercom
Washington D.C. “They’ve built an incredible community of listeners and
we’re thrilled that they’ll be entertaining DC sports fans on their drives
home for years to come.”

“This is a huge opportunity and a thrill,” said Paulsen. “Like almost
everybody else my age, I grew up listening to 106.7 FM and I dont take
lightly what it means to host the drive-time show on such an important
radio station. Im honored to have this opportunity with Danny and cant
thank our listeners enough for making this possible.”

“Growing up in the Washington D.C. area, I loved 2 things: D.C. sports
teams and WJFK,” said Rouhier. “It is surreal to me that a local kid gets
to live out his dream and talk sports in my hometown. We owe everything to
our amazing listeners who have supported us over the years and its because
of them that we have this chance.”

Paulsen and Rouhier have hosted “Grant and Danny” on 106.7 The Fan since
January 2014, quickly establishing their show as the number one rated
midday sports show in Washington, and a go-to destination for interviews
with high-profile athletes and leaders in Washington D.C. sports.

Paulsen joined 106.7 The Fan in 2009 and was named as the station’s
Washington Redskins beat reporter a year later. In 2014, he joined the
station’s midday show alongside Rouhier. He currently hosts pre and
postgame coverage for Washington Capitals games on NBC Sports Washington
and writes a regular column for The Athletic. He was named the 2017 D.C.
Sportscaster of the Year at the National Sports Media Association’s annual
awards. Rouhier joined 106.7 The Fan in 2009 as an on-air contributor
before expanding his role to a full-time host in 2010. He has served as a
co-host for the station’s midday show since 2011.

Fresh Listen: WFEZ (Easy 93.1) Turns Ten

Posted: 08 Jan 2021 08:20 AM PST
https://radioinsight.com/ross/203798...3-1-turns-ten/

When WFEZ (Easy 93.1) Miami launched on Dec. 26, 2010, it took the success
that owner Cox had at WDUV Tampa and propelled Soft AC from an outlier into
a format category. Soft AC always had its fans in the industry, but any
sort of building boom seemed to sputter quickly. Typically, there would be
one new station that never got traction, and one that did well enough, but
whose owners gave up on trying to sell upper demos after a while.*

Now, WFEZ is a decade old. Two years ago, Soft AC became not just a format
category but a feeding frenzy after the successful launch of KISQ (The
Breeze) San Francisco. Not every Soft AC saw the same sort of success;
several are gone already. But both WFEZ and KISQ continue to prove that
sustained success is possible. Since Christmas, Southern Broadcasting has
launched the format on both WYDS Corinth, Miss. (with a music mix clearly
influenced by the current WFEZ), and, earlier this week, on WTKI (Easy
105.3) Huntsville, Ala.*

When I wrote about the building boom two years ago, I noted more than a
half-dozen reasons that the format was finally taking hold. One of them was
the erosion of 12-to-34-year-old radio usage, leaving all gold-based
formats with a bigger share of the remaining listening. That’s only more
true now. COVID-19’s disruptions to listening patterns have also proven to
benefit a format that earns its TSL the traditional, pre-PPM way, by being
listenable for long stretches.

In PPM over the last six months, KISQ has been in the 4.6-5.4 6-plus range
while Mainstream AC rival KOIT has been between 3.7-4.4. (In December,
Christmas music finally propelled KOIT ahead 6.3 to 5.0.) In Miami, WFEZ
has been between 6.1-7.5. In December, it went 7.5-7.1 and led the market.
Part of WFEZ’s success has been its strength with older men, which
surprises some people, but it’s a station that began with lots of ‘60s
oldies and Soft R&B, two things known to draw male numbers. (Soft R&B is
certainly a major part of KISQ’s success.)

When WFEZ launched, Mainstream AC WLYF had just been through a period of
trying to shed some of its images as one of the format’s older/softer
stations. When WLYF settled, it was still more traditional than most
similar stations around the country, even in 2010, and on the night that
WFEZ launched, WLYF was planning two station anniversary concerts featuring
Barry Manilow. That led to a moment in WFEZ’s first hour where both
stations were playing Manilow at the same time, a rarity in 1990, much less
2010 And WFEZ’s hour also featured multiple similar Soft AC statement
artists.

Here’s WFEZ in its first hour on Dec. 26, 2011:

Whitney Houston, “The Greatest Love of All”
Simon & Garfunkel, “Bridge Over Troubled Water”
Neil Diamond, “I Am, I Said”
Journey, “Open Arms”
Beach Boys, “California Girls”
Stylistics, “You Make Me Feel Brand New”
Classics IV, “Traces”
Barry Manilow, “Weekend in New England” (WLYF was playing “Copacabana [At
the Copa]”).
Kenny Rogers, “Through the Years”
Harry Chapin, “Cat’s in the Cradle”
Jay & the Americans, “This Magic Moment”*

Here’s WFEZ a few weeks later at 9 a.m. on Jan. 13, 2011:

Moody Blues, “Tuesday Afternoon”
Michael Murphey, “Wildfire”
Classics IV, “Traces”
Carole King, “It’s Too Late”
Casinos, “Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye”
Gloria Estefan, “Here We Are”
Eagles, “Best of My Love”
B.J. Thomas, “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head”
Climax Blues Band, “I Love You”
Beach Boys, “Warmth of the Sun”
Stylistics, “I’m Stone in Love With You”
Gerry & the Pacemakers, “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying”
Barry Manilow, “Somewhere in the Night”
Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway, “The Closer I Get to You”
Rick Nelson, “Garden Party”
Paul Simon, “Slip Sliding Away”
Association, “Never My Love”

Here’s WLYF (Lite 101.5) during the same hour:

Anita Baker, “Sweet Love”
Bee Gees, “Jive Talkin’”
Shania Twain, “You’re Still the One”
Pointer Sisters, “Jump (For My Love)”
Little River Band, “Reminiscing”
Aerosmith, “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”
Bruno Mars, “Just the Way You Are”
REO Speedwagon, “Keep On Loving You”
Chic, “Good Times”
Laura Branigan, “Self Control”
Elton John, “Daniel”
Rick Astley, “Never Gonna Give You Up”
All-4-1, “I Swear”
Lifehouse, “You and Me”
Grover Washington Jr. f/Bill Withers, “Just the Two of Us”
Bryan Adams, “Heaven”

Part of the Soft AC playbook has often been to evolve as close to
Mainstream AC as possible, preferably pushing the incumbent AC out of the
way so you have more room to maneuver. Neither WFEZ nor KISQ have managed
to eliminate their rivals. KISQ seemed to briefly attempt modernizing, then
retrenched after a period where the numbers softened. But even with WLYF
there, WFEZ has segued to a brighter, gold-based AC approach, positioned as
“favorites from the ‘80s, ‘90s and more” but manages to tether it to the
station of a decade ago because of the “Easy 93.1” name, and perhaps
because of the different energy of South Florida itself.*

WFEZ did nudge one of its other targets out of the market. SBS-owned WCMQ
(Classica 92.3) Miami was a unique mix of Spanish- and English-language
Oldies. In December, its successor, Tropical Latin “Zeta 92.3,” was third
in the market, up 4.6-6.1. Meanwhile, it’s roughly true that WFEZ has moved
into WLYF’s old position, but it’s really gone a little further than that,
since WLYF was the type of AC station that was still not playing “Living on
a Prayer” a decade ago; WFEZ does play it.

With the Soft AC boom of the late ‘10s came a second set of stations, led
by WRME (Me-TV-FM) Chicago, that occupied a position more like the original
WFEZ — ‘60s oldies and ‘70s soft AC. WRME has remained viable even after
being shortspaced by iHeart’s WLIT (Lite 93.9), which returned to the Soft
AC business two years ago. So has Ross On Radio reader favorite KDRI (The
Drive) Tucson, Ariz. Both stations have signal issues; both stations have
owners who see the mid-three share range as a franchise, not a niche.

WFEZ has thus far also managed to hold iHeart’s new all-‘90s WMIA (Totally
93.9) at (Biscayne) bay. WMIA’s big months have been in the high
two-share-range. In December, with holiday music kicking in on WLYF, it was
off 2.7-1.6. WMIA’s representation of New Kids on the Block has been “Step
by Step,” a truly lost song until last year, but their biggest song that is
actually from the ‘90s. This weekend, when I took a “Fresh Listen” to Easy
93.1, WFEZ was playing it too.

During the hour below, WFEZ twice reminded listeners that it played the Bee
Gees, resurgent nationally because of their HBO documentary, but always
local favorites. The Bee Gees were mentioned as a core artist in a music
promo, but also in a “South Florida’s Home for the Bee Gees” liner that
played when the act did. Another promo described the station as “your happy
place,” with “more of the ‘80s that you grew up on, ‘90s that are
memorable, and more of your favorites from today.” The station promises to
surround “you with your greatest memories.”

Here’s WFEZ on its anniversary, at 1 p.m., December 26, 2020:

Sting, “Fields of Gold”
Brenda Russell, “Piano in the Dark”
Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper, “Shallow”
Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine, “Conga”
Mariah Carey, “Dreamlover”
New Kids on the Block, “Step by Step”*
Bee Gees, “Too Much Heaven”
Johnny Hates Jazz, “Shattered Dreams”
Alicia Keys, “If I Ain’t Got You”
UB40, “Red Red Wine”
Elton John, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”
Bruce Hornsby & Range, “The Way It Is”
K-Ci & Jojo, “All My Life”

San Jose Sharks Depart KUFX For Streaming Channel

Posted: 08 Jan 2021 05:00 AM PST
https://radioinsight.com/headlines/2...aming-channel/

The NHLs San Jose Sharks will launch a 24/7 streaming channel next week to
take over as the home of their radio broadcasts.

The Sharks Audio Network will air all Sharks and their minor league San
Jose Barracuda games along with ancillary programming. The new channel ends
a 20 year partnership with Bonneville Classic Rock 98.5 K-Fox KUFX. Sharks
Vice President of Communications Scott Emmert told the San Jose Mercury
News, This certainly was not a situation where we were dissatisfied with
KFOX. They’ve been a great partner to us. But the reality is even the
strongest signals have their limitations. There’s only so many 50,000 watt
flame throwers out there.

The team sought to have one place where listeners could find the games
throughout the Bay Area, so despite losing their FM broadcast they believe
this is better for future growth with Emmert stating, When you’re splitting
the audience, it does make it tough, particularly when ratings come into
play, when there’s market demographics, when you’re trying to entice
advertisers to support, there is a little bit of a need to centralize a lot
of this content.

This is similar to the move that MLBs Oakland Athletics attempted to make
in 2020 as they partnered with TuneIn to place their games on the app, but
in the first week of the season backtracked and made a deal with
iHeartMedia to air on 960 KNEW.

The San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) today announced a pioneering
enhancement of the teams broadcast operations with the launch of the Sharks
Audio Network, which will debut on Tues., Jan. 12 at 8 a.m.

The Sharks Audio Network will provide an unmatched resource for consistent
and unique Sharks and Barracuda-related audio programming, content and game
broadcasts. The 24-hour, seven days a week audio feed will be available via
the Sharks+SAP Center App and online at sjsharks.com.

The Sharks Audio Network is presented by its founding partners, including
Del Grande Dealer Group (DGDG.COM), Hilton San Jose, Jack Daniels, and
Coors Light.

As part of the Sharks Audio Network programming schedule, the platform will
include the audio broadcast of all regular season and Stanley Cup Playoff
San Jose Sharks games. Long-time play-by-play announcer Dan Rusanowsky
(@DanRusanowsky) returns for his 30th season behind the microphone. He will
be joined by color analysts and Sharks alumni Scott Hannan and Mark Smith.

In addition to live game broadcasts, the Sharks Audio Network plans to
offer a wide variety of Sharks and Barracuda programs, including exclusive
programming with Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson, Sharks Head Coach Bob
Boughner, in-depth player profiles, game highlights and replays, catch-ups
with Sharks alumni, classic Sharks games, as well as an opportunity for
fans to interact with Sharks and Barracuda hosts and personalities.

Sharks personalities Rusanowsky, Randy Hahn (@sharkvoice) and Bret Hedican
(@BretHedican) will all have a presence on the Sharks Audio Network. In
addition, Ted Ramey (@TedRameyMedia), who has served as the host of Morning
Tide for the last two seasons, will also return as a major contributor to
Sharks Audio Network programming.

Sharks Audio Network broadcasting will commence on Jan. 12 at 8 a.m. with
the 2020-21 San Jose Sharks Season Preview show presented by SAP, and
hosted by Rusanowsky, Hahn and Hedican. The 60-minute program will break
down the Sharks 2021 training camp and take a look at the unique NHL season
that lies ahead. Guests on the show include Wilson, Boughner, along with
several Sharks players.

From launch day through Jan. 13, the 2020-21 San Jose Sharks Season Preview
show presented by SAP will air, surrounded by six of the most memorable
classic game broadcasts in Sharks history: Game 1 for the Sharks franchise
(10/04/1991 at Vancouver); 1994 Game 7 upset of the Detroit Red Wings
(April 30, 1994); 2011 four-goal comeback playoff game against the Los
Angeles Kings (April 9, 2011); the Sharks advance to their first Stanley
Cup Final (May 25, 2016 vs. St. Louis Blues); Game Three overtime win in
2016 Stanley Cup Final (June 4, 2016 vs. Pittsburgh Penguins); 2019 Game 7
comeback against the Vegas Golden Knights (April 23, 2019).

On Thurs., Jan. 14 beginning at 7:00 a.m., the Sharks Audio Network will
unveil a complete slate of new and unique programming throughout the day,
leading into the Sharks season opening game against the Arizona Coyotes at
6 p.m. PDT.

One of the most common requests we receive from our fans is We want more
Sharks content and news coverage,' said Sharks Vice President of
Communications Scott Emmert. The launch of the Sharks Audio Network
provides a near-limitless reach of our audio game broadcasts while
dramatically increasing the quality and consistency of Sharks-related,
unique programming.

In addition, San Jose Barracuda games with Nick Nollenberger (@NickNollen)
on the play-by-play call, will also air on the Sharks Audio Network
providing the opportunity for all Sharks fans to keep an ear on the Future
Sharks as they hone their skills in the American Hockey League. In the
event that Sharks and Barracuda games have overlapping broadcast times, the
Barracuda broadcast will shift to the San Jose Barracuda platform, also
contained within the Sharks+SAP Center App. Weekly Sharks Audio Network
programming will also include Barracuda-focused content, programs and
updates once the American Hockey League is underway.

Additional programs will be announced in the coming weeks.
