Just put a piece of paper over it, or anything that is white; napkin,
whatever. It will keep the unit cool as the black of the case won't absorb
the suns rays that way. Hell, if you aren't real concerned about the looks,
you could spray-paint the covers of the radio white and significantly reduce
the problem...

Personally, I wouldn't leave any type of dark colored electronics in direct
view of the sun. It will certainly shorten it's useful life. Instead of
the radio lasting 15 or 20 years (or more), it may shorten it's life to like
maybe, 7 to 10 years. The heat won't kill it immediately, but it will
definitely takes its toll on the electronics inside. The most likely
problem you will see first will be broken solder connections. This is due
to the expansion and contraction of the components inside which is caused by
the constant heating and cooling of the unit.
