Hello Floyd:

The receiver can be checked with a signal tracer or audio amplifier with
a RF probe, the distorted audio can be isolated to the offending stage.

Distortion is usually a bias problem, but can be a speaker, bad
connection at a external speaker jack, or again the wrong voltages
somewhere in the radio.

Touch the middle terminal on the volume control, you should hear a hum,
and if the hum is distorted as the received radio signals you have
isolated it to the audio stages.
