A cheap interface for your soundcard/rig combo and software for the
mode you want. Find one prebuilt, a kit or roll your own.

As someone else said, they're pretty easy to make, but
you can also get them assembled and wired for your own
radio from "BuxComm," run by Buck, K4ABT. I bought one
from BuxComm a few years ago and saved the bother of
getting all the parts, etc. www.PacketRadio.com or
www.COMMparts.com/catalog. Cheap and easy, many (?all?)
of them come with software on a CD, so you can basically
spend an hour hooking up and installing, and be working a
digital mode the same afternoon.

I know Buck is still in business because I was using one
of his interfaces between my PC and FT-840 to work PSK31
and RTTY; then I went inactive for a few years and sold
the FT-840. Decided to play on HF again, dragged out the
706, and instead of buying connectors and making a cable,
I just ordered a cable from BuxComm, pre-wired, to go
between the sound card and 706. Didn't cost much more
than the two connectors would have cost at Radio Shack.
:-)

Good luck! The digital modes--particuarly PSK31 IMO--can
be a WORLD of fun!
