It's easy for it to take a long time. When I was cleaning out our
car to trade it in, I found a direct QSL request stuffed down the
back of one of the seats. And I found a couple more during an
office move earlier this year. On the positive side, I have sent
out 10-20 thousand handwritten cards more promptly than this :-)
