3V8SS OPERATOR. Some have been inquiring about who was active from 3V8SS
in November/December last year. Well, the answer is Alex, GM0DHZ. He
informs OPDX that he made quite a few QSOs while there and also mentioned
that he is planning to go back again, but details still have to be
confirmed yet. Stay tuned!

3Y, BOUVET ISLAND (Update). Petrus, 3Y0E, continues to be active on 14200
kHz usually between 1700-1900z daily. Look for updates and announcements on

9X, RWANDA. After one year trying to get a license to operate from Rwanda,
Toni, EA5RM, (Team Leader) has traveled to the RURA offices in Kigali, the
capital city of the Republic of Rwanda, to pick up the 9X0R licence. Toni
states, "RURA is trying to establish amateur radio rules in Rwanda with the
help of Peter, 9X5SP. Right now there is not an easy way to get an amateur
radio license here but in a few months things should be different and
ham radio activities will start to be more usual from this country. I'm
grateful to RURA General Director and Peter, 9X5SP, for their help and
cooperation, and at the same time, my team and I are happy and proud for
our little contribution to the future of amateur radio in Rwanda." The
9X0R multinational team will be active from Rwanda in March of this year.

A6, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES. Members of the Emirates Amateur Radio Club
(A62ER) will participate in the 3rd International Scouting Gathering
and UAE Scouting and Humanitarian Work event in Sharjah between January
17-24th. They will use the special event callsign A60ISG. This is the
first time for UAE to activate a special callsign. QSL via IZ8CLM.

AAW. The 5th Antarctic Activities Week (AAW) will take place between
February 18-24th. A lot of stations with special callsigns are lining up
to participate in this year's event. Read about the details of the AAW

CARIBBEAN OPERATION CANCELLED (FJ and PJ7). "The Daily DX" reports that
Gregg, W6IZT, who planned to be active from Sint Maarten (PJ7) and St.
Barthelemy (FJ) this past week, had to cancel because of health issues.
Gregg had severe abdominal pain, resulting in an emergency appendectomy.
OPDX and its reader wish Gregg a speedy recovery.

CT3/CT9, MADEIRA ISLANDS. Operators Falk/DK7YY, Ulf/DL5AXX, Tom/DL5LYM
and Frank/DL8WAA will be active as CT3/homecall between February 12-18th.
QSL via their home callsigns. The team will be active as CT9L during the
ARRL DX CW Contest (February 16-17th) as a Multi-2 entry. QSL via DJ6QT.

Announcement from the ARRL DXCC Desk (on the FJ/OH2AM operation):
"This operation by OH2BH and OH0XX was conducted under CEPT
Recommendation T/R 61-01. This Recommendation makes it possible for
radio amateurs from CEPT countries (and certain non-CEPT countries)
to operate in other CEPT countries without obtaining an individual
temporary license from the visited CEPT country.
Complaints were received from several individuals. The main thrust
of the complaints is that the operators used a club call for which
Laine is station trustee, rather than their individual callsigns.
The intention of the operators in using a single callsign was to
limit the number of duplicate contacts. Many DXpeditions use club or
special-issue callsigns for this reason. The Recommendation makes no
mention of club callsigns but says that the visiting license holder
'must use his national call sign preceded by the call sign prefix of
the visited country.' Other operations using club callsigns from French
territory, including in the Caribbean, have taken place under provisions
of the Recommendation and have been credited for DXCC.
Since the question was raised, checking with various CEPT administra-
tions and with the European Radiocommunication Office (ERO) has revealed
different views regarding the use of club callsigns under the Recommenda-
tion. The ERO observes that the use of a club callsign could prevent
an administration from determining whether a particular operator is
qualified and concludes, 'Club members, including the holder of the club
callsign, should use their national personal callsigns when abroad.'
In the case of FJ/OH2AM, the two operators clearly were qualified to
operate in St Barthelemy under the Recommendation. They utilized a call
authorized to them by their national authority. The purpose of a radio
station callsign is to identify the administration and the licensee
responsible for the operation of the station. The use of FJ/OH2AM rather
than FJ/OH2BH and FJ/OH0XX did not thwart this purpose.

EA8, CANARY ISLANDS (AF-004). Niels, OZ7FOC, will be active as EA8/OZ7FOC
from Isla de Tenerife (DIE S-012, WLOTA LH-1276) between January 14-26th.

FO, FRENCH POLYNESIA. Freddy, F5IRO (aka TO4E, FK/F5IRO, FR/F5IRO,
FY/F5IRO and TO7R) on a 4 months assignment to Papeete, Tahiti (IOTA
OC-046, DIFO FO-002), is now active as FO5RU until January 21st. Most
of his activity has been on 40/30 meters. He is expected to be active
during his spare time on all HF bands, CW, SSB and RTTY. QSL via Rafik,

FJ, ST. BARTHELEMY (DXCC Newest Entity!). Operators Paul/F6EXV and
Yuichi/JR2KDN continue to be active as TO5FJ until January 20th. Yuichi
is scheduled to leave St. Barts on the 15th, but Paul will remain until
the 20th. The operators were only using wire dipole antennas at first
but are now using a cushcraft beam with a WARC band attachment on it.

FO/M, MARQUESAS ISLANDS. Operators Jouko/OH1RX, Pertti/OH2PM, Veijo/OH6KN
and Juha/OH8NC are active as FO/OH1RX from Nuku Hiva (OC-027) until January
22nd. Activity will be on 160-10 meters with a maximum of three stations
running. However, they plan to concentrate on 160-30 meters. QSL via OH2PM,

FT5W & FT5X, CROZET AND KERGUELEN ISLANDS. Gildas, TU5KG, is once again
heading to the Southern Indian Ocean area, around Kerguelen and Crozet
Islands. No details or dates on whether he will be making stops on these
islands, but he has new callsigns issued to him. They are FT5XR and FT5WN.
You will probably hear them first on maritime mobile. QSL via F4EFI, by
the bureau or direct.

H7, NICARAGUA. Andrei, EW1AR/NP3D, will be active from here as H7/NP3D
between February 3-11th. He is actually going there for the CQ WPX RTTY
Contest (February 9-10th). As a member of the Yankee Clipper Contest
Club, he will use the callsign H7/NP3D before and during the Contest.
While there his focus, of course, will be on RTTY on all HF bands, then
CW and SSB. For the contest he is not sure if he will be a Multi or
Single Band entry. This will be determined upon his arrival. He will
be joined by Demitry/AK2P and Joel/KB2PDW later on while down there.
Logs will be uploaded via LoTW on daily basis if Internet does not fail

HA-DX CONTEST. Tibor, HA1AH, would like to remind everyone that the HA-DX
2008 Contest is next weekend, January 19-20th. Activity will be on CW and
SSB on 160/80/40/20/15/10 meters. Complete details are available at:

HC8, GALAPAGOS ISLANDS (SA-004). Peter, DL9DAK, is expected to activate
the Galapagos Islands this week (January 15-18th) before heading to
Guayaquil, Ecuador (January 19-21st). Activity will mainly be on 20/17
meters (with some 40 meters) only on the digital modes (RTTY, PSK31/63,
MFSK, Feldhell and Olivia500/1000) using only vertical dipoles and 50

HK0, SAN ANDRES ISLAND. A group of six members of the Texas DX Society
plan to operate from San Andres Island, Colombia, from March 1-6th. This
will include participation in the ARRL International DX Contest (Phone)
on March 1-2nd. The group will use two separate stations with beam and
vertical antennas. After the contest operators will use individual
callsigns on SSB, CW, and digital modes on the major HF bands. Callsign
assignments are pending. W5PF is the QSL Manager for all callsigns used.
After the operation logs will be uploaded to the ARRL's "Logbook of The
World" (LoTW). Operators will be WF5W, W5PF, K5WAF, NM5G, W5PR, and N4AL.

II3, ITALY (Special Event). Special event station II3NIK has been on the
air as of January 1st and will continue until June 30th. Activity is to
celebrate the Nike Hercules Memorial Year. The last symbol of the Cold
War left the launcher of an Italian Air Force base last November 24th,
2006. Nike Hercules missile system was a Silent Guardian of the European
N.A.T.O. skys and some Asian States the all of the second half of the
last century. Look for II3NIK to be active on 80/40/30/20 meters, CW,
SSB and PSK31. All contacts made with the II3NIK special event station
will be confirmed by the bureau or by direct to IZ3JJD: Andrea Zecchinato,

IOTA NEWS..............................
AS-060. Chae, HL5YI, will be active as HL5YI/4 from Sorok Island (WLOTA
LH-1252), January 18-21st. Activity will be on 80/40/20/10
meters, CW, SSB and RTTY. He plans to participate in the UK DX
RTTY Contest (January 19-20th). QSL via his home callsign,

EU-120. Operator Jon, M0OVL, will be active as M0OVL/p from Holy Island/
Lindisfarne, July 26-27th, for the RSGB IOTA Contest. QSL via
his home callsign, direct or by the RSGB bureau.

EU-125. Tom, DL4VM, will be active as OZ/DL4VM from Romo Island (NS-001
for the Danish Islands Award) between September 6-20th. Activity
will be on 40/20/15 meters, and perhaps 10/6m depending on the
conditions, using CW and running only 5 watts QRP. QSL via his

EU-128. Operators Axel/DH8AK, Sebastian/DO6ELW, Dirk/DK4DJ and Henning/
DK9LB will be active as homecall/p from Fehmarn Island (O-01
for the German Islands Award) from March 14-21st. They will
also activate two lighthouses: Marienleuchte - Old Tower (ARLHS
FED-151) and Marienleuchte - New Tower (ARLHS FED-016, WLOTA
LH-0637). Activity will be 80-10 meters, SSB, PSK31 and 2m SSB.

EU-174. Mike, DF3IS, will be active as J48IS from Thassos Island,
Greece, May 23-28th. He plans to be active in the CQ WPX
CW Contest. Outside of the contest, look for activity on

J3, GRENADA (NA-024). Gerhard, OE3GEA, is nowe active as OE3GEA/J3 until
January 24th. Activity will only be CW. He was heard this past week on

J5, GUINEA BISSAU. Members of the "F6KOP TEAM" are now active from Bubaque
Island (AF-020 and WLOTA 1145) until January 21st. Activity is on all

JD1, OGASAWARA. Operators Makoto/JI5RPT (JD1BLY), Motoaki/JE1EKS (JD1BMO)
and Isao/JM1WBB (JD1BMP) will be active from Chichijima Island (IOTA
AS-031), February 13-28th. Activity will be on 160-6 meters with operations
on the Satellites, CW, SSB, Digital modes and 2 meters WSJT EME. Makoto
informs OPDX that they have, for the first time, a 2m EME 500 watts license
for this DXpedition and for the first time they will be active on WSJT EME.

JW, SVALBARD. Just a reminder that Unni, LA6RHA, will be making her 16th

KH2, GUAM. Look for members of TIARA (Tokyo International Amateur Radio

FJ/OH2AM QSLS. QSL Manager Jarmo, OH2BN, reports: "We are delighted
to inform you that QSL cards for the FJ/OH2AM operation will start
going out early next week now that the operation is accredited for
the DXCC award program as of January 11, 2008. Full-color cards will
be arriving from the printers in Poland on the 15th of January (Tuesday)
and we will start processing direct requests immediately. The legwork
is already done, all envelopes opened and sorted. Those 23,340 QSOs
made by the duo represent 11,730 individual DXers and obviously that
many QSL requests as well. The logbook will be included in the LoTW
later this year. Because of the close DXCC Honor Roll submission date,
March 31, 2008, we plan to make out all QSLs received during January
to be released during the month of February. By the 20th of February
we will release a status report and probably another option to bypass
the queue for those who at that time still want to have QSLs received

GS/IRC CHART. Bill, W9OL, has provided an interesting "Green Stamp/IRC
Chart" to reflect some 2008 postal rate changes. Look at this excellent

"The Mongolian Radio Sport Federation (MRSF) QSL Bureau does not work
any more", states Khos, JT1CD. The only QSL Bureau in Mongolia is the

Ulaanbaatar-24, Mongolia.

NEW QSL MANAGER. Irv, K3IRV, is now the QSL Manager for PP5EG.

NO LONGER MANAGER. Emir, 9A6AA, reports that after 9 years, and being
one of the founders of the Islands Of Croatia Award (IOCA), he is no
longer a IOCA Manager. He states, "Nobody knows why because there is
no explanation from new 9A HQ." However, 9A6AA will stay as IOTA Country
Assistant and will keep the IOCA-IOTA parallel list on his Web site at:

VE NEW CANADIAN POSTAL RATES: Canadian international postal rates will
rise on January 14th. The new rate to the USA will be .96 Cdn and else-
where in the world 1.60 Cdn. Both rates cover up to 30 g. Sales tax is
also charged by the Canadian post office on stamps which means that
at the current rate of exchange of approximate par with the U.S. dollar,
1 USD is now insufficient for mail to the USA. 2 USDs has been required
to cover return postage for international mail for some time.

TF, ICELAND (Correction). There was a small typo in OPDX.840. Siggi,
TF3CW, will be active during the CQ 160-Meters CW Contest (January
26-27th) as a Single-Op/Single-Band (160m, not 40m as mentioned last

TG9, GUATEMALA. Norm, W1BYH, will be on a holiday here between January
12-18th. He expects to be active (callsign was not provided) on 40-10
meters with an emphasis on 30/17/12 meters, CW, SSB, RTTY and PSK31.

TI9, COCOS ISLAND (Update). A international group of operators will
activate Isla del Coco (NA-012) between February 4th to possibly the
16th. They will use the callsign TI9K. The team now plans to have up to

TX5, CLIPPERTON ISLAND (Update). The countdown has begun for the TX5C
DXpedition on their Web site. The international team of operators (20)
will depart February 28th, for Clipperton and plans to be active between
March 7-17th. Activity will be on 160-6 meters CW, SSB and RTTY. Last
week Alpha Radio Products was announced as a major sponsor of TX5C, and
the TX5C team will be using Alpha HF amps exclusively. Also, TX5C's pilot
stations were announced. They a Paul/VE7BZ, Jean-Michel/F6AJA and

V3, BELIZE. Yuri, VE3DZ, will be active (callsign pending) February
12-18th. He plans to be active during the ARRL DX CW Contest (February
16-17th) as a Single-Op/All-Band entry.

VI2, AUSTRALIA (Special Event). The Blue Mountains Amateur Radio Club
will be celebrating their 50th anniversary during January 2008. The ACMA
has issued the Blue Mountains ARC with a special event callsign to
commemorate the club's 50th anniversary. The callsign, VI2BMARC50, will
be on-air for 10 days from January 18th to January 28th, 2008. Two
attractive QSL cards have been prepared for this special event: a standard
sized 6" x 4" card and a larger very attractive card signed by the current
club executive. QSLs can be sent via the bureau or direct to the club's
PO Box. There will be a cost of $5.00 for the larger card to cover return
postage. So please give VI2BMARC50 a call and help the Blue Mountains ARC

VK9W, WILLIS ISLAND. Chris, DL1MGB, informs OPDX: "After a very successful
DXpedition to Norfolk Island in February 2007 with over 60,000 QSOs logged
under VK9DNX the activation of Willis Island is planned for October 2008.
The same experienced team from VK9DNX (DJ7EO, DJ9RR, DL1MGB, DL3DXX,
DL5LYM, DL6FBL, DL8OH and DL8WPX) will be active with four high power
stations for about 17 days from 160-10 meters on CW, SSB and RTTY. More

VP5, TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS. OCARC Member Bob, K0OK, will be active
as VP5/K0OK from Providenciales Island (NA-002), May 21-28th. He will
participate in the CQ WPX CW Contest (May 24-25th) using the callsign
VP5E. Activity outside of the contest will be on all bands. QSL VP5/K0OK

VP6, DUCIE ISLAND (Update). Some interesting news is available on the

In short, all equipment that was shipped from Germany and the USA has
now arrived in New Zealand, and everything except the last air freight
shipment (laptops, microKeyers) has cleared customs in Auckland. This
equipment is now traveling by truck to Tauranga, the home port of the
"Braveheart". On-line QSL information has been added to the DXpedition's
Web site at: http://www.vp6dx.com
They state on the Web page: "No need to fill out a card or write a
letter... and no need for self-addressed envelopes! Just fill out an
on-line form to request QSLs." Go to the Web page and read the details

VP8, FALKLAND ISLANDS. Operators Dave/G1OCN and Carol/2E1DQZ will be
active as VP8CLE and VP8DKW, respectively, between January 19th and
February 2nd. Activity will be on 80/40/20/17/15/10 meters SSB only.
Also, look for FM activity on AO-51 and SO-50 satellites. QSL direct

YA, AFGHANISTAN. Reports indicate that Salvatore, IZ1BWB, is in Kabul
and has been there since December 23, 2007. He is currently signing
YA/IZ1BWB and is expected to remain there until August 2008. Over the
past week he has been spotted on 14250 kHz afte 0800z and on or around
7005 kHz after 1700z (as late as 2100z). Salvatore is only using a
FT-897D with 100 watts and a folded dipole. QSL via his home callsign,
direct or by the bureau.

YASME PRESS RELEASE. Wayne A. Mills, N7NG, President of the Yasme
Foundation, sent out the following release on January 8th: "The Directors
of The Yasme Foundation are pleased to announce the establishment of the
Yasme Excellence Awards. These awards will be given from time to time as
the board feels appropriate.
The awards are categorized roughly in accord with FCC (USA) 'Basis and
Purpose' for amateur radio as consistent with the foundation's purposes
and expertise. Those areas of amateur service include noncommercial
communications service, advancement of the technical and operating arts,
technical training and international goodwill.
There is no application for these awards, but suggestions regarding
deserving individuals will be considered. Each prize consists of a plaque
and a monetary award. Suggestions of worthy recipients may be sent to the
address shown on the Foundation's Web site.
This year's awards total USD 8,000. The winners for 2007 have been
selected and will be announced at the end of next week.

YS, EL SALVADOR. Bob, I2JIN, is now active as YS3/I2JIN until January
27th. Activity will be CW ony. He was heard this past week on 20/17

ZF, CAYMAN ISLANDS (6m Op). Operators Jim/K4BI and Mario/K2ZD are planning
a major 6m DXpedition to here. Tentative dates are possibly June 20th
through July 8th. The will be running an ACOM amp into a 6M5X. Their
beacon will be on 50.095 MHz. Callsign will be either ZF2BI or ZF2ZD.
Emphasis will again be EU, AF, SA and AS, but will of course work NA.
They will have HF capability but don't plan on being there very much
or very often. Look for more details later.
