Amateur Radio now officially DEAD at Radio Shack

- it looks like amateur radio is now officially dead at Radio Shack

- the company no longer lists any transceivers, and appears to have
dropped its only HT from the on-line catalog

- there are still some accessories for sale, but all seem to be
third-party

- it looks like the sell-off (which began several years ago) is now
complete: no HTs, no mobile VHF/HF units, and no more amateur radios

- but you can get your NASCAR scanner, belt accessories and headphones!
(and a cellphone and satellite TV service)

whoo hoo!

:P

NEWS GROUPS July 4th 03 05:40 PM

Hmmm.

They should take the word "Radio" out of the name of the stores. The store
name should be "Shack." Sounds appropriate to me.

Cheers,

Interesting that Charles Tandy bought RadioShack in 1963 for only
$300,000. Turned out to be a pretty good investment!

Actually I don't give a rip if Radio Shack sells ham radios or not. I
would miss the resistors, capacitors, relays and other misc electronic
parts they sell. I hope that stays.

By the way I still have an old original Radio Shack catalog before Tandy
bought them out.

Given the proliferation of mail order ham radio stores and their
competitive pricing, and the fact that few Radio Shack employees can
meet the "you got questions, we got answers" brag in regard to ham
radio, I wouldn't be surprised if RS gave it up.

On the other hand, maybe they're simply cleaning out stock for the
publication of their next catalog...
