Default FT-817 CW Keying Question

I am trying to help a friend with his FT-817. He is trying to hook up
a keyer to the unit. The manual shows a picture of the proper hookup for
a straight key/keyer and for a set of paddles, to use the internal keyer.
The straight key/key hookup shows a 2-conductor plug and the paddle
hookup shows a 3-conductor plug. All this makes sense and the keyer
cable was wired to a 2-conductor cable. However, it doesn't work. The
keyer keys other units just fine.

But if you go to the instructions for enabling the CW mode it specifically
says "3-conductor plug" in the section for a straight key/keyer. This
conflicts with the hookup diagrams. Which one is correct? Should he be
really using a 3-conductor plug for all hookups? If so, where should
the wiring go?

I have not had access to the FT-817 yet so I don't really know if
my friend is setting it up correctly, but I am still curious about the
discrepency in the instruction manual. It may be that he just didn't
set it up right and this is a non-issue.

Any help?

Martin

It actually makes no difference whether he uses a two or three conductor
3.5mm plug. Just ensure that the '817's internal keyer is disabled using
the menu, and ensure that your keyer is configured for normal, positive
keying and not grid-block keying (it probably is already set correctly
as grid-block keying is very rarely used nowadays).

That's what I would think. I will have to double check the configuration.
That's got to be where the problem is. Thanks for the feedback.
