I'm trying to assemble a wireless network between two computers. The
maximum range is 300m. All the network will do is transfer data from a
GPS plus an additional 34 bits of data from one computer to another.
Can anyone recommend a cheap, easy to use product? Preferably
something that connects to the USB or serial port.

Pcmcia WiFi cards with external directional antennas, or USB WiFi dongles if
line of site, or better yet, usb/ethernet WiFi game adapters with highly
directional external antennas... Easily do-able for under $100.

directional external antennas... Easily do-able for under $100.

will be mobile and although it too will have an GPS having a
directional antenna means I'll have to move it in the right direction.
Is RF a better solution?

You specified between computers, So, surplus wifi adapters with the drivers
are found cheaply most anywhere...
What could be much easier, as Windows and most all Linux OS have all the support
built in..

WiFi is RF, it's just how the data is transfered.

Use a high gain vertical whip (7-14") high, 3-9 db gain on the mobile.
The antennas can be any type of high gain depending on your particular
requirements.... A good setup would be a matched pair of pcmcia card to
high-gain vertical for the mobile, to either the same on the fixed, or on the
fixed a good WiFi router with high-gain antenna, all of the same manufacturer.

I use the Buffalo WLI-CB-G54HP card with external 7db mag mount vertical,
talking to a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 WiFi router with a 7db external vertical,
and have gotten over a mile line-of-site data. Total cost was just under $100
for all a couple of months ago.. I wouldn't be surprised if it is less now..
