Default TS-830S Problem

After spending two winters in an unheated workshop, my TS-830S is not
functioning properly. No RX, no TX. Also, when I first turned it on
the frequency LED display lit up and then faded to black. I live in a
damp environment, Vancouver Island BC. Is my trusty old 830 ruined?

The final output tubes are lighting up as they should. I'm wondering
if there's a bigger issue since there's no RX either.

I was thinking maybe get some contact cleaner and clean all the
connections inside where the different modules connect to the main
board?

Anyone had a similar experience?

Jim,

Yes, I had a similar problem with one of my TS-830s rigs but to a lesser
degree. The problem would occur like yours, then the display would come on,
frequency would be irratic for another 20 minutes or so. This is the classic
Kenwood grounding problem cited in the QST review of the TS-830S and also
described by Rich Measures (AF6K?). Solution is to tighten all screws holding
PC boards to the frame and attaching a ground wire to the AF/AVR board (Rich
Measures website has step by step instructions). Not sure if this is related
to your problem or not.

All good advice. Also remove those little plastic plugs on the boards.
Eyeball for corrosion or wetness. Clean as needed and spray with a good
quality contact cleaner.
