Is Advanced Specialties close by New York -- some one sed about 9 Miles but miserable traffic http://www.advancedspecialties.net/ http://www.advancedspecialties.net/Map.htm Given the tax structure, with a 3% NYC sales tax on top of the 5% NY state sales tax, many retailers of large ticket items have relocated outside the boundaries of NYC. Same thing here in eastern Mass, where many retailers are located just over the border into "tax free" NH. There used to be a lot of radio stores in lower Manhatten, but I believe they mostly disappeared around the time the twin towers were built for the WTCenter. You might go to Google and do a search for "ham radio + Manhatten". Bob k5qwg Incognito, how do you get there using public transport?? I used to use Barry, but they closed after 9/11. |

Post to Group. ============ Your best bet would be to place an order with a major outside of NY City dealer such as Ham Radio Outlet www.hamradio.com and have the order sent to your address in New York City. The Delaware store should be able to get it there within one or two days via United Parcel Service, plus, on orders over $100.00 there is no shipping charges added. Ray K1XV |

I would also recommend KJI Electronics in NJ. You can see their website at
www.kjielectronics.com. Very well priced, major Icom dealer, but can get other brands on order. Call to arrange. They are about one hour out of New York City. Advanced Specialties mentioned by others is more local, but doesn't have the selection that KJI does. Bennett ko2ok |

I've dealt with all the local retailers and frankly nothing will beat HRO's prices, no tax, no shipping charges and never a problem to deal with. I have ordered from both stores, but I prefer the New Hampshire location personally - though the Delaware location is equally pleasant. I will *never* deal with Barry Electronics again, by the way. I felt totally slimed going in there. The one time I did venture down there I was being ignored in favour of a customer of apparantly middle-eastern origin who wanted to buy "a fleet" of Icom VHF amateur radios and was asking to have them modified to "transmit anywhere." He was also asking about "secure scramblers" for them. While that was bad enough, the clerk was giving him pricing for just that. This was all before 9/11 and if I'd remembered the exact date, believe me, I'd have already contacted the authorities about it. It was sometime in the spring of 2001 - that's all I can remember. When I finally did get around to looking at the radio in which I was interested, their prices were about 25% higher than HRO plus NYC sales tax on top of that. Needless to say, I waited till Dayton and bought there. 73 de Peter, W2IRT (ex-AB2NZ, VE3THX) Please reply to Double-you Two Eye Are Tee at Arrl.net |
