Default Kenwood TS440- need help

I havent used my TS440S/AT in some time and turned it on last night. I just
keept beeping and the display lit up segments that were not numbers, so I
quickly turned it off and made sure it was not keyed or anything else was
amiss externally. I retried t but it did the same thing again. My suspicion
is that the circuit board battery has finially died? Does this sound like
the result, and how is it replaced? I went to Kenwoods website to check
for a service bulletin but there was none, this is probably covered in the
service manual.

Could be the famous "PLL unlock" failure mode.
See http://www.mods.dk/view.php?ModelId=521
or google "ts-440 pll".

Hi Mike
I think the battery is only for memory.
You should join this Yahoo Group and read about the " brown goop " and
the PLL unlock.

It sounds like the battery is marginal. Do a reset (A=B plus turn-on) and
see if it corrects the problem. If so the battery is on it's way out.

It's not a PLL problem.

Many Thanks-I just tried the hold A=B and power up reset and it worked! I
down loaded the Service Manual somebody sent me the link to from mods.dk
site, I found the battery in the parts list but couldn't find its location.
Is it obvious when you crack the case, and is it a common battery to find an
equivalent locally.
thanks again for the tip.
