You do have to release the side of the headliner. Use a Unibit to drill the hole, and put a metal plate or something similar under it to prevent drilling into the headliner. In my case, the Jeep had an overhead console. I took that down and could see the roof where I wanted the hole to be. The Larsen mount is designed to be used between a headliner and the roof. I like the ones that use a 3/4" hole, but there is one that uses a smaller hole. When you get ready to sell the truck, just put a Larsen hole plug in the hole. Practically invisible.
