Why not just get an older laptop running Windows 98 or Me for your ham programs. That's what I did. Got an old Sony laptop that works great. I only use it in the Jeep with GPS programs or programming the Kenwood D700A. If I am at home I just use the home computer. My regular laptop doesn't have a serial port either, and I gave up trying to use a USB to Serial adapter. Dick |

I agree that an older computer running Win98SE *should* be more than adequate for handling ham radio applications, but the author of my favorite ham radio program, Ham Radio Deluxe, says that he doesn't always test minor updates of his program (e.g., the recent one that added rotator control) with Win98SE or WinME and that with the next major update he may declare WinXP to be the only officially supported OS. "Perce" (aka Alan NV8A) Older computers can also run Windows XP. My comment was only related to the fact that it would be typical to find something like Me on an older computer. I have a computer that is over 10 years old that is running Windows XP SP2 with no problem at all. The Internet wasn't even available to the public back then. And yes, it does have an RS-232 port. For many years, it was my ham radio computer, long before XP was envisioned. Today, with XP SP2 it will take on any ham radio program. I can also dual-boot it into Windows 98 Me if I have to have it for something. Dick - W6CCD |

Do you have to have a serial port on the laptop? Many newer
laptops/notebooks no longer supply a serial port. One solution you may consider if you get stuck is a USB to serial converter. There are so many of them out there. A few of them are junk. One that I have found to work is the Belkin F5U109. I am even able to get it to work with MS-DOS applications that run in a window in WinXP. The drivers allow you to select a different COM port in the setup. Mike McWhinney |

Hello N1RSP (George)
Here I run Converter USB 232: USB - Serial (Driver & Manual). Tested to comply with FCC Standards for home or office use. Model No. U232-P9. It works very well with XP 4 and AEA 2232 interfaced with Yaesu FT-990. Good luck, VE2GAG -- Lambert Tellier M.D. "N1RSP" wrote in message news:vKfof.3743$pF.832@trndny08... The problem with usb to serial converter is that it runs way to slow on most
programs I use.I have the Belkin USB to Serial als another one and just to slow.Direct to serial port is many times faster. "N1RSP" wrote in message news:vKfof.3743$pF.832@trndny08... In article C6nof.4177$Bj4.3661@trndny01, "N1RSP" says:
The problem with usb to serial converter is that it runs way too slow on most programs I use. Interesting, 'cause I use my USB-enabled serial port to download data into flash onto my clients' boards at 115.2K at full speed and with negligible CPU usage. Maybe it's a settings problem? What does "too slow" mean exactly? -Kenny -- Kenneth R. Crudup Sr. SW Engineer, Scott County Consulting, Los Angeles H: 3630 S. Sepulveda Blvd. #138, L.A., CA 90034-6809 (310) 391-1898 |

takes just 4 to 5 minutes to upload a program.and on the other hand mine is 2.4 with a usb to serial with same program and it takes me 20 minutes to upload same program to same item.
