Eagle is crippleware, but with lot of library symbols. Any PCB's will be
limited to two layers and 100mm by 80mm size.

I also think there is a limitation on the hierarchy of schematic
subdrawings.


Go get KiCad. GPL license, no limitations and runs on both Linux and
Windooze. You find KiCad on the net for download.

Certainly worth checking out, but I'd be surprised if most people felt that
KiCad and EAGLE with "roughly comparable" -- most people would definitely tend
to prefer one over the other.
