You mean "you know your passenger is a ham when ..."
If he were a geek, the clock would read out in BINARY (or Hexadecimal).


I worked on mainframe computer systems for 27 years and had a BCD
clock with neon lamp display, the counters used 12AX7s. It ran on my
desk for years and one of the new guys had built one using 74 seies
ICs. He just could not believe it the day he saw me changing tubes in
my clock.
