Default Heathkit is BACK!

Check out their website. Heath is going back into the kit business.

HEATHKIT IS BACK In The Kit Business!

In late August, Heathkit will debut their new line of Do-it-Yourself
kits for common around-the-house items. The first kit will be a Garage
Parking Assistant (GPA). The Garage Parking assistant kit lets you
build your own system that uses ultrasonic sound waves to locate your
car as it enters the garage. The system signals to the driver using LED
lights mounted on the wall when the car is detected and in the perfect
spot for parking.

The GPA-100 kit consists of two primary assemblies - The LED Display in
kit form and the pre-assembled ultrasonic range module. the kit will
include everything you need to complete the project except a soldering
iron and hand tools.

Next on the market will be a Wireless Swimming Pool Monitor kit followed
by many more. Heathkit wants to continue to bring to its customers
interesting, unique Heathkit products. Heathkit is interested in
learning what types of products kit builders would like to build. Kit
builders can submit their suggestions through this website using the

Pointless without a radio or two being simple and affordable

And...I'm not so sure they will be the "kits" of the old days with a bag
of resistors and some capacitors. Looks like they will basically be PC
board modules that one simply puts into case??? Can't tell for sure,
though...

I would not hold my breath if I were you. This is not the same Heathkit
that we all remember. Their primary business is selling training
materials.

Yes. I was trying to remember if what is now "Heath" was a subset of what
existed after a retrench, or if the old company shut down and sold the
name and whatever was of value to some other company. I can't remember
which. I remember when the kits stopped, the story was "No more kits" in
large print, then "but training material continues" in very fine print,
but I can't remember the complete story.

There was some fuss a year or two ago when someobdy bought the rights to
the old manuals and started charging for them. That the company sold off
those rights suggests it is a distinctively separate company now, but I
can't remember.

I'm crossing my fingers but I don't expect anything big from Heath, at
least not for a while. They are just testing the water now and if the
response is good they will add to the line. Might be a few years before
they go 'all in' on the kit business.

I've never ordered any of their educational products, but I've been told
that the manuals are up to par with the best of the materials they
produced in the kit business.

It wasn't only a shift in consumer attitude toward DIY that killed off
the old Heath. Electronics has become more high tech with tiny parts
that defy kit builders. The pendulum has swung back though, and DIY is
in vogue again. Witness MAKE magazine, Adafruit.com, sparkfun.com,
evilmadscientist.com etc. The 'maker movement is the new DIY. This
will involve different kinds of kits, such as building your own CNC
mill, laser cutter or 3D printer. (google the web, such projects are
common). If heath can offer products into this area they will scratch
an itch and do well.

Thanks!

There ARE still about 750,000 US HAMs who build from scratch, or kits,
when we can find them!

That is a large enough market, but, when added to the "Make Use Of"
crowd, and the "Instructable" folks, the computer "modders", X10, and
Arduino fans, and we can see a market of at least 1.5 million potential
kit builders!

I know that in building the inexpensive kits from India, that usually
don't contain the cases, knobs, transformers, (no problem!), there are a
lot of us hungering for more projects, that are more complete!

The kits mentioned aren't going to be of interest to anyone.

For some good ideas of what would be of interest, just check old HeathKit
catalogs. Times may have changed, but we haven't. We like amateur radio
kits, stereo kits, clock kits, computer kits. Only a bit of updating is
necessary to sell all you can make.

Ah yes
the good old days.

Though I built a few Knightkits in my time
I never built any Heathkits but I did once own
a Heathkit Cheyenne transmitter.

At one time I used the external power supply
as a battery charger for my '53 Chevy truck.
(bought it in 1971)

I just took the heavy duty 6v filament winding
and ran it to a bridge rectifier.

The truck usually did start on cold days...
but quite often I'd park it on the top of a hill
and "pop the clutch" to get it started.

The hill was long enough to give me three chances
and only once did that method not work

Times have changed...
and Heathkit will never be what it was back in the old days...
nothing will be like it once was back then

No I don't work for them but I have given them my credit card number
several times. My primary HF rig is a K2/100.
