Default 433MHZ modules followup

A week or so ago, I asked for some advice on using these modules to trigger
my camera shutter remotely.

I first wanted to thank all who replied. I tried the PLL approach and it
seemed to work ok until I connected an 'antenna' to the receiver. That
seemed to produce a lot of noise that was able to overcome the PLL at times.
I also tried a bandpass filter and had the same problem with noise. I
finally broke down and bought the holtek 12D and 12E and have decided that
is the optimum solution. The 'antenna' I refer to is just a 15cm piece of
20ga solid copper insulated wire, but it gives me a range of about 30 to 35
meters which is more than I expected.

So I am wondering about antennas. As I said, I am using a single piece of
solid copper wire attached directly to the antenna input of the receiver and
output of the transmitter. Why don't I need a ground too? I have been
reading my radio amateur handbook, and I guess this antenna could be
considered a dipole, but the book shows that I should have a ground
connection somewhere, ie , like maybe dual conductor wire with one lead to
the antenna output or input of the TX or RX, and the other to ground, then
bend the tops of the wires at right angles (horizontal) at the right
multiple of wavelength.

Any one have any ideas? I guess I am looking to maximize my range now.

TIA,
Joe
