Default where to get burs for Dremeling PCBs?

Hello. When I make PCBs for homebrew projects, I often use a Dremel
Moto-Tool with a dental bur for cutting the pattern into the copper
foil. About ten years ago I bought a bunch of burs from someone at the
Dayton Hamvention. Now they're worn out, and I'd like to get some more.
Does anyone know where a hobbyist can buy these things? See photo at

Like Joe mentioned, dentists will often be willing to give you some old
burs. I don't have many carbide ones, but I do have a whole mess of
steel ones that a dentist didn't want to try to sort out after an
earthquake many years ago. I might be able to send you a few. Also, I
notice as I write this that Google has put some suggestions for dental
bur sources in the column adjacent to this... you might try these, or
a Google search for dental burs:

www.net32.com, www.dollardiamonds.net, www.hobby-store.us

Also, if you go to your dentist armed with knowledge of how much the
burs cost (see net32.com, for example--looks like the best of those
three sites for what you want), you might be able to get him/her to
sell you some new ones at a reasonable price.

Cheers,
Tom

Hi Joe,
Your call sign indicates that you MIGHT be in the Chicago area.
If you are, you could be in luck. I sold 300 pounds of tungsten carbide
PC board bits to American Science & Surplus a few years back. I
originally purchased them from the Inventory Disposal Store at
Rockwell-Collins, and they were pulled out of service from their board
shop.
The last thing I remember was seeing them at 50 cents each. These are
very good bits..............I only kept 1200 of them for myself.
You can reach them at (773) 763-0313.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll be seeing my dentist soon, so will
start by asking him about the burs.

I've found the "asking the dentist for the old worn out tools etc" is a
myth. I have asked and the official answer was due to the tools being used
in blood, bone and possibly disease they are discarded when worn, not given
away. Makes good sense to me! New industrial dental picks and bits are cheap
and available all over the place.

My dentist (and my previous dentist) autoclave them and give them out
to an eager waiting list of people.

Yes, this is what I have seen.

If there were such a risk of disease transmission, then they could
never use the tools on a second patient.

Autoclaving professionally done removes the risk of disease
transmission. It is just a matter of doing it before giving them away.

Happy trails,
