This is WIANEWS for week commencing JULY 29 2007
VK1WIA - WORLD NEWS. RSGB asks for input. The main news of the week in Amateur Radio is taking place in the UK. Extensive flooding across many parts of the country. The RSGB is aware of many RAYNET groups being put on standby due to the flooding and continued flood warnings. As this is an ongoing scenario, The UK Society is unable to bring us news of the RAYNET groups who have been involved but will broadcast full details when known. RAYNET groups actively involved are requested to inform RSGB HQ of their activities and to what level they have been able to assist emergency services. RD WEEKEND NEWS PLANS August 11 and 12 is the RD weekend and the news will be produced as usual, so you "don't miss a thing". HOWEVER It is up to the individual rebroadcasters as to when they will transmit. I'd suggest you do ask when you check in after this weeks news as to when the RF edition in your area will be heard. Of course no matter where you are in Australia the WIA Audio in mp3 can be accessed after 0100 hours UTC Saturdays each and every week, just point your internet browser to wia.org.au and click on "broadcast". Speaking of the broadcast, last week with some 95 RF checkins to the 9am edition on VK5RAD Adelaide, if each of those 95 were to call back on the RD weekend AND submit contest logs, by my reckoning, VK5 would scoop the pool in this 2007 Remembrance Day Contest. And also don't forget prior to the 08ooUTC Saturday start of the RD, the annual opening address will be broadcast, we remind all rebroadcasters to make sure they are subscribed to wiabroadcasters at yahoogroups dot com so they are advised of both the duration and the site of this address. This is played at 5:45pm aest as it runs (including 1 minute silence) 15 mts. (to subscribe blank email to ) BPL INTERFERENCE - THE BATTLE CONTINUES BPL (PLT IN SOUTH AFRICA) CONTINUES TO BE PUNTED BY VENDORS This past week PLT was again the subject at a conference held in Sandton SA. A new company which has been very active promoting PLT is IPOWA. According to their website IPOWA is the exclusive local provider of the world's leading broadband-over-Powerline (BPL) system. A proven, cost-effective and robust route to rapid broadband deployment, iPOWA is the last-mile solution for which utilities, ISP's, hotels, schools and property developers have been waiting for. By leveraging existing infrastructure and utilizing a unique plug 'n play system, iPOWA is the key to high-speed access that works - fast. Three of their representatives presented their case at Internetics 07, a conference about IT and the internet, sponsored by Internet Solutions. iPOWA's approach has been somewhat different from their previous presentation at a broadband conference a few weeks ago. This time they are promoting it as the fixed line solution that powers the internet 15 times faster than ADSL and that besides the internet provides opportunities for power management, meter reading, electricity demand control to prevent black outs, security cameras and traffic management. Problems such as interference to HF never entered into their discussion. They however did admit that they are waiting for ICASA to license PLT, which is the official name for BPL. The interference issue of PLT and possible interim standards is on the Agenda of Committee TC73, the SABS committee on EMC standards which meets mid August. The SARL is keeping a close watch. In the last couple of weeks we've heard several items about the national band plans. I think last week's broadcast highlighted the fact that band plans are a very good idea. Our hobby covers a wide range of different interests. So we have different band segments for different modes such as SSB or FM, and different channels for repeaters and simplex. And within the simplex segment, we have different channels for voice, packet, SSTV, and so on. This allows everyone to follow their different interests without getting in each other's way. One of the main features of the band plan is the national voice simplex calling frequency, on 146.5 MHz. This is a channel where anyone can make a call, or listen for other stations, no matter where they are. But that means that the channel needs to be used for the same purpose everywhere in the country. If it is used for links, or nodes, or audio streaming, it can't be used as a calling frequency. And this leads to the kind of clashes and arguments we've heard about in the last couple of weeks. As new operating modes come along, we need to keep the band plans up to date and recommend suitable frequencies for them. In the last few years we have added recommended national frequencies for APRS and for digital DX modes, and these are working very well. And it has also been done for new linking systems like EchoLink. The band plan includes four recommended channels for simplex IRLP and EchoLink nodes. These frequencies are between 145.325 and 145.400 MHz - and they were recommended because they don't clash with any existing activity. If you would like to look further into the band plans, you can find full details in a PDF file on the WIA web site. And if you'd like to make any comments or suggestions about the band plans, the email address to use is (via John Martin VK3KM, chairman WIA National Technical Advisory Committee) HAMS ACROSS AUSTRALIA. (2sky) VK2 WESTLAKES AMATEUR RADIO CLUB say anyone wishing to take part in a future Foundation Class can leave their details on the form to be found on the Club notice board. Doors open to the public at 10am and for traders at 7.30am. Anyone wishing to book trading tables should make contact early. VK7 REAST in VK7 have run an RD Contest information night which was well attended and hopefully encouraged all to contest on the 11th & 12th of August. They went through a little history of the RD contest along with a special VK7 link in Max Loveless VK7ML (SK) and "Winnie the War Winner". Then the group went into an outline of the rules, especially the new ones for this year and finished up with a demonstration on the big screen of the three RD specific contest loggers. REAST looked at John, VK5DJ's logger, the VK Contest Logger – RD section by Mike VK3AVV and WinRD+ by James VK6FJA. Seems the general consensus was that VK5DJ's logger was the preferred logger as it was easy to use and setup and was the only one that didn't require the running of more than one instance of the application. The presentation that was given on the night is available at the website address that can be found on the email and internet editions of this broadcast. http://reast.asn.au/events.php#rdinfonight EDUCATION YOUTH AND ADVANCEMENT OF AMATEUR RADIO PRESENTED BY KYLEA VK6FXYL F-Troop in Victoria Jim Linton, VK3PC tells us that some interesting topics have been raised over recent months on the F-Troop Net that occurs on the Mt Macedon VK3RMM two-metre repeater on Sunday morning straight after the VK1WIA broadcast call-back. Virtually any amateur radio topic is welcome. The net controller is usually either Ross Pittard VK3FCE or Terry Murphy VK3UP. The idea behind F-Troop is to get more experienced radio amateurs, such as WIA Assessors and course trainers, to provide advice and help in the spirit of amateur radio. Standard and Advanced Licence holders will also be most welcome to join in. Please don't just listen, join in and make it a useful and worthwhile exercise. F TROOP IN QOUEEENSLAND The Maryborough Electronics & Radio Group ("Merge") are gathering together prospective "F" Troopers for their 3rd training group. Kathy Johns VK4YMS, and Ray Stockdale VK4TPT, will be conducting the training and it is hoped that they will be respectively WIA accredited assessor and training facilitator in time to conduct the exam and assessment at the end of the course. Any persons in the Wide Bay area interested in obtaining their Foundation Certificate or up-grading to Standard or Advanced Certificate are asked to contact Kathy, (07) 4123 3098, or Ray, (07)4123 2958, INTERNATIONAL NEWS TOKYO TO HOST WORLDS TALLEST TOWER Wired.com says the tallest broadcasting tower ever built is coming to Tokyo, Japan.. The 2001 foot high structure, which still doesn't have a name, will host the digital radio and television transmissions plus a mobile TV network. When completed in 2011 the concrete-and-steel tower will be the highest free-standing antenna in the world. (ARNewsLine) New look Canadian HF band plan We have been speaking a fair bit of late about bandplans, the why and how, well Jim Linton VK3PC tells us that "Radio Amateurs Canada" has released its proposed HF band plans which generally align with the IARU Region 1 plans but have some unique features. These mainly come in the form of notations to identify suggested frequencies or centre of activity for things like QRP, QRS CW, SSB DXpedition priority (14.190 - 14.200MHz), IOTA, AM, Global Emergency, Image Modes and Very Narrow Digital. Also among the proposals is an expansion of the DX window to 3.775 to 3.800 for two hours either side of dusk and dawn to aid Grey Line propagation. For the website link, check out the text edition of this broadcast. The draft plan can be read at: www.rac.ca/service/RAC_Draft_HF_Band_PlanR1.pdf ================================================== ===================== NEWS FROM ARNEWSLINE HAM RADIO IN SPACE: SUPER EFFICIENT AMPLIFIER DESIGNED BY AMSAT HAMS The Amsat News service reports that Allen Katz, K2UYH and Marc Franco, N2UO have developed a VHF, high-efficiency, class-E, R-F power amplifier. One with a DC to RF efficiency of 86.8%. A-N-S says that their design is based on silicon carbide metal-semiconductor field effect transistors. The amplifier efficiency was measured at around 86 to 88% with this number holding quite well at almost any drain voltage or output power. The AMSAT News Service says that this type of amplifier is under consideration for the envelope elimination and restoration linear amplifier planned for the upcoming AMSAT Eagle ham radio satellite. The design was presented in a paper at the IEEE International Microwave Symposium in Hawaii. It is now available on-line at http://www.cree.com/products/wireless_docs.htm titled "Class-E Silicon Carbide VHF Power Amplifier" (ANS) INDONESIA: ORARI PROVIES A NEEDED EMCOMM SERVICE Indonesian Amateur Radio Organization Vice President M Jusuf Kalla says that his organization is still needed. Especially during emergencies and also to reach areas not accessible by telephones. In a recent interview with the Antara News Service, Kalla is quoted as saying that experience has shown that telephone transmission towers and cellular phone networks are usually among the first structures to collapse in disasters like earthquakes. Kalls says that in those such situations, Indonesian Amateur Radio Organization members often provide out to be a welcome alternative means of communication. According to the Kalla, every telecommunication technology device has its advantages and disadvantages. He noted that not all areas of Indonesia’s vast territory are accessible by telephones. As such, two-way radio is still needed as a means of communication with people in these remote areas. Now in its 39th year, the Indonesian Amateur Radio Organization has been in providing communication support during disaster-caused emergencies in the country (ANTARA News) ================================================== ===================== WEIRD N WONDERFUL The Maryborough Electronics & Radio Group in Queensland is trying to gather together 300+, 35mm film canisters and a similar quantity of the red caps from the PET bottles of a well known Cola drink. Why? you ask. Well, according to Ray Stockdale VK4TPT, President of MERGE has been requested to build a means of checking the speed of human powered vehicles in the pit lane during the 24hr Technology Challenge on 15th-16th September. Budgetary and Manpower constraints preclude the use of Radar Speed Guns so "MERGE" have decided to utilise a LED chaser circuit with the speed set to give the appearance of a string of moving lights at the required 10Km/hr limit. As the pit lane is 300 meters long this would require at least 300 lamps, each containing a cluster of ultra bright LEDs to be seen in bright sunlight and normal LEDs for night time. Even if such devices were available commercially, the cost would be prohibitive, hence the canisters and Cola caps. "MERG" is draining the local photo processing outlets but will not reach the required qty in time so they are asking Amateurs to go to their local photo processors and collect as many 35mm canisters as possible. The desired ones are black with grey lids as the Cola caps fit snugly inside. Ray suggests that, aside from any "Colaholics", the best source of the caps may be the local re-cycling depots as the caps must be removed before sending the PET bottles for re-processing. So there you are Guys & Girls. See what you can collect and contact Ray VK4TPT on (07) 4123 2958 or to arrange postage. Now we learn Denmark is to get a 40 MHz beacon. On July 18, Denmark's regulator issued a permit for the beacon OZ7IGY to operate on 40.021 MHz. The beacon will be subject to the following conditions: Non interference Max. 25 Watt to an Omni directional antenna max. 0 dBd, max. 10 metres above ground (100m asl). The permit is valid for a year and the results of the experiment are to be reported to the ITST. OZ7IGY currently operates on 50.021 and 70.021 MHz and a number of other frequencies. In filing its request the club had maintained that the assignment of NM5UFO would be in keeping with the theme that Roswell, New Mexico which has been known since 1947 as the site of a UFO crash. In denying the request the FCC simply said that the requested call did not follow the agency's sequential callsign assignment system. Plan ahead to work San Andres as K3WT, N0STL, W0OR and N0AT will be active from there between November 19th and the 27th. Operations will include the CQ World Wide DX CW Contest on November 24 and 25. This will be a Multi-Single entry. Also coming on this November is Greneda. This with seven operators active as J3A also during the CQ World Wide DX CW Contest. Outside the contest they will be using their own personal callsigns. QSL J3A via WA1S. (ARNewsLine) THE QNEWS WORK BENCH - the nuts and volts report - (Measure twice - Cut once!) EMERGING TECHNOLOGY: NEW HIGH SENSITIVITY CAMERA CHIPS A new image sensor could revolutionize the way you take pictures. Even those you send via A-T-V. Jim Davis, W2JKD, says: "Eastman Kodak says it's developed a colour filter technology that will at least double the sensitivity to sensors used in digital cameras. Kodak expects to provide samples of the new chips to a variety of camera manufacturers in the first quarter of 2008. The new technology is likely to be quickly incorporated into mass-market point-and-shoot cameras and camera-equipped cellular telephones phones beginning sometime next year." The new sensors are not quite see in the dark devices, but are the next step in getting there. (ARNewsLine) MEDIA WATCH AMATEUR LOGIC TV A month or so back we heard from the Australian reporter for this Amateur Radio hobbyist show produced in Mississippi, namely Peter VK3PB Well Peter reports that episode 14 of Amateurlogic has just been released. It can be downloaded from the downloads section at amateurlogic.tv In the new episode Peter interviews 3 of the EMDRC Guys about the impact of the Aussie Foundation Licence, and wearing his WIA Directors hat Robert Broomhead. Friday nights if your in Melbourne, tune into ATV repeater VK3RTV from 8.00 PM Friday nights. WIRELESS WEATHER Paul Vk2HV from Westlakes Club says we all should circle Sunday, August 12 and write "all night meteors!" Yes it's time for the 2007 Perseid meteor shower. The Moon is new on August 12th--which means no moonlight, dark skies and plenty of meteors. It is estimated one or two Perseids per minute at the shower's peak. The show begins between 9:00 and 10:00 pm on Sunday, August 12th, when Perseus rises in the northeast. This is the time to look for Perseid Earthgrazers--meteors that approach from the horizon and skim the atmosphere overhead like a stone skipping the surface of a pond. And if your a meteor scatter 'buff' the band should be "pinging!" By 2 am on Monday morning, August 13th, dozens of Perseids may be flitting across the sky every hour. The crescendo comes before dawn when rates could exceed a meteor a minute. (Westlakes News) NOW ROBERT BROOMHEAD - VK3KRB.
